A friend brought to my attention a recent article in Harper's Magazine, "The Lost Yearling: An American classic fades away" by Lauren Groff. It is an elegy to a state that resists introspection. In important ways, it also describes the interior state that informs Eye On Miami. Both bloggers -- and many of our readers -- are of the age that picked up "The Yearling" by Marjory Kinnan Rawlings in elementary school. It is worth revisiting by clicking here.

I first read The Yearling when I was a teenager, at the urging of my mother, whose copy of Cross Creek Cookery I inherited. I next read The Yearling when I was in my mid-30s. It was as good then as it was when I was a teen-ager. Highly recommended.
