Oleta Park Land Taken off the DEP Excess Land List According to Sally Heyman. By Geniusofdespair
County Commissioner Sally Heyman's Chief of Staff has told me that Oleta State Parkland is OFF the DEP excess land list. Thank you Sally that is really good news. Thank you to everyone that made a big stink. It worked!

Sally, you give me hope for our county and our future. If I get laid off from the library, I will volunteer to work for you (after I organized the collection of 50,000 signatures in a recall campaign in November.) I've lived in Miami-Dade for 27 years and want to retire here. I cannot let what I've seen in the last two months continue. I want to thank you for your moral compass.
Sorry to disappoint but if you research it, you will find out the reason it was taken off the list was because of legal issues. The contract for the purchase of that land forever ago specifically states it can never be sold or be anything other then a public park. That's why it was taken off the list not because bloggers complained. I hate to be a downer but its the truth and a bit of a reality check.
Hey buzz kill --- deed restrictions are not worth the paper they are written on unless there are people there to fight for them. The county commission just lifted a 25 year deed restriction banning residential outside the UDB. Public outrage goes a long way. Deed Restrictions, not as bulletproof as you would believe.

FIU still wants to pave Oleta Park and drain the mangroves. FIU wants to expand onto the State Park.
