Department of Health Warning about the Biscayne Bay Algae Bloom. By Geniusofdespair

Doesn't sound very reassuring to me. Can anyone tell me firsthand what the algae bloom is like?

But it's lobster mini-season!

Consider the algae just a stinky, not to be touched cocktail sauce. I'm sure you can find serving recommendations on the Convention and Visitors Bureau website.

Opaque, brown and smells like sewage. Really.

I hope the Florida Dept. of Health has posted this notice at all the marinas and beaches. Considering that so few have health insurance, it will be very tragic to have people contract diseases they can't see a doctor about. Especially vulnerable are children. And pets apparently. This story is being seriously underplayed.

I first encountered the bloom on June 22 between Black Point and Elliott Key. Water was muddy brown and smelled like shit. My first thought was it was a sewage spill from the wastewater treatment plant or upwelling from the sewage plant's injection wells. Covered a large area but had not reached Elliott. Yesterday I went back out and the waters between Black Point and the inside of Elliott were pea green. The bloom has clearly expanded. Was a busy day on the water with lots of folks swimming in the soup....
