My family jokes about my concern about the flu. I was obsessed with the bird flu scare, when it first emerged a few years ago. It was a family occasion for eye-brow raising, when my father was alive: his concern for his children's health during virus season. It is all about context. His context was being born in Hungary in 1922, four years after the Spanish flu raced across the globe. I never knew his mother, but I imagine that having survived that flu, her antennae were on high alert for her own children. At any rate, I asked my kids to get flu shots. I'm still asking ...
