Barry Lopez is one of my favorite writers. Hands down, his non-fiction work on the natural world and culture is the best in contemporary America. What I learned in a recent interview on NPR's Fresh Air is that Lopez is also a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. The NPR interview is one of the most raw, heart-felt and devastating revelations of trauma I've ever experienced. I strongly urge you to listen ... and read Barry Lopez, if you haven't. The Harper's Magazine story, "Sliver of Sky: Confronting the trauma of sexual abuse", is available online here.
