Poverty By Commission Districts. By Geniusofdespair

District 1 - Barbara J. Jordan
District 2 - Jean Monestime
District 3 - Audrey Edmonson
District 4 - Sally A. Heyman
District 5 - Bruno A. Barreiro
District 6 - Rebeca Sosa
District 7 - Xavier L. Suarez
District 8 - Lynda Bell
District 9 - Dennis C. Moss
District 10 - Javier D. Souto
District 11 - Juan C. Zapata
District 12 - José "Pepe" Diaz
District 13 - Esteban Bovo, Jr.

It appears that Audrey Edmonson's District has the highest level of people and families living in poverty in every single category. We have 18% of households in Miami Dade County living in poverty, bad enough, but in Edmonson's district the number is at 31%. The county should be addressing district 3 more vigorously with job training and other programs.  Xavier Suarez has the most affluent residents. But still he has 21% in nonfamily households living in poverty.

There was a Miami Herald story several years ago that revealed that Miami Dade county was one of the poorest areas of the country in terms of per capta income.

Genius: Thank You. This information is very enlighting. Maybe this will help in making good decisions about communities. Lets focus on improving and not spend time on trivia e.g. praying before meetings. Next thing we know we will be doing closing prayer or benedictions. Stick to silent meditation. If not lawsuits will be forthcoming. You now have a vice chairman that lawsuits follow her. Homestead is still dealing with lawsuits from her reign as mayor.
Again Thanks Genius for all your excellent information that you give to us.

Unskilled jobs are a thing of the past. You need training or go work at Walmart.

It is unbelievable that there is so much poverty while county employees are paid such outrageous salaries. They live like kings while we live on crumbs.

Don't harbor a grudge for someone making under $50,000, most employees salaries. Sour grapes. Don't be jealous of hard working people.

Don't be so gullible. Visit the mayor's new transparency web page and look up county employee salaries. Last year 18,877 county employees earned between $50,000 and $584,791.57 (Year: 2011; Minimum Year-to-Date Salary: 49999).

Of those, 4,065 earned at least $100,000. (Year: 2011; Minimum Year-to-Date Salary: 99999). George Burgess was the employee who pulled down $584,791.57 last year.

Only 11,709 employees made less than $49,999, and those include part-time workers, temporary elections department poll workers, and employees who did not work a full year.

You don't need to be a rocket scientist or a statistician to see that it is statistically impossible that the majority of county employees earn less than $50,000.

The relative affluence of District 4 may explain why Sally Heyman was comfortable voting against working families...she opposed the earned sick leave ordinance and it died on first reading.
