Absentee Ballots: Watch your penmanship! By Geniusofdespair

In the 2012 Primary Election, the Canvassing Board rejected 307 ballots based on signature not matching. We can't even write our own names correctly in Florida!

That number of thrown out ballots could change an election!  Link to our election endorsements.

Vote NO on Miami Dade County Tennis Center Question:

Bruce Matheson in a full page ad in the Miami Herald today says VOTE NO on the Tennis question. Bruce posted the full text of his ad in the comments section. In 1940, the Matheson family donated hundreds of acres on Key Biscayne to the county for Crandon Park. Bruce says this tennis center expansion is contrary to the spirit of the Matheson family gift. He urges you to vote No on the Crandon Park Tennis Center expansion question. Both Gimleteye and I agree with Bruce. Even though the ballot question says no county funding is needed, Matheson says $50 million in County bonds is involved and it is a sweetheart deal for tennis promoters.

This is ridiculous! My ballot just got a rejection because of this and I have to resend it! I voted absentee because I work 2 jobs and don't have the time. I was born here and voted every election since I was old enough I vote. Now I have to fill out a form and mail it back and I don't even know if it will be accepted! I've signed the same way all my life, don't know what my signature is based on or how I can get a copy of it!

Penmanship...at least you get a second chance.

and you can't get a copy of it...I tried to help Mrs. Thompson with that. Even if you go down there they probably won't show it to you.

I like the safeguards in place but I do think they should let you see your OWN signature.

Thank you for calling out the hypocrisy and misinformation on the tennis stadium issue. The Herald really mislead voters in their editorial. The $50 million bond issue backed by voters for this means our taxpayer money involved- it's our credit borrowing we are giving the for profit company and taxpayers are on the hook if they default on loan payments. Think Parrot Jungle, Marlins stadium. Vote No. This isn't a "park partnership" as the tennis promoters claim, it's a party palace proposal for their personal profit.

Climate change sea level rise is expected to start flposing out the barrier islands like Key Biscayne within a decade. So no, the tennis people will abandon that site long before they pay back the bond money. Vote no to this boondoggle.

Do you know how they got Key Biacayne to support the tennis complex expansion- promising to develop soccer and sports fields for them. Back room deals. Key Biscayne will get use of those fields exclusively because no urban programs will have access or availability. Yet taxpayers will be on the hook.

Sports fields there will bring pesticide and fertilizer run off into Biscayne Bay, sensitive mangrove ecosystem. Haven't we done enough damage with golf course there?

I saw the one page ad today from Mr. Matheson. I'm very upset as a voter we were not told about the 50 million we'd be on the hook for if the developer bails or goes broke. That's not what the language says. As someone in support of this I am glad I haven't voted yet because I want to honor the wishes of the family foremost and secondly It's not right to keep the public on the hook with out disclosing this because I'm sure more would be voting NO. THANK YOU FOR THE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. This is stuff the Herald won't print unless forced to or someone buys and ad. Shame on them.

Here’s the text of the ad in today’s Miami Herald on the Miami Dade County Ballot question on whether the Tennis Stadium should be allowed to expand:

Re: The Crandon Park Tennis Center Expansion Referendum

Miami Dade County Commissioners:

Trying to push through an expansion of Crandon Park Tennis Center without giving voters all the facts could put the County in a Different kind of Court

Why not tell Miami Dade Voters THE TRUTH about what you’re asking them to approve with this referendum question?

- Florida law requires that notice of a referendum proposal must be “clear and unambiguous,” cannot “fly under false colors,” or “hide the ball as to its true effect.”

-Why haven’t any actual plans or specifications for this massive development ever been provided to the public? How could voters possibly know what you’re asking them to vote on?

- Where does anything you’ve provided tell voters that a professional tennis promoter and its political allies in County government are proposing a 50-year sweetheart contract requiring $50 million in County bonds to finance a massive expansion of the structures and commercial uses on the Crandon Park Tennis Center site in the heart of Crandon Park, the public’s pristine sylvan retreat on Key Biscayne?

-Why haven’t you told the public who will have to pay the $50 million County Bonds if the tennis promoter decides to leave or goes out of business during the 50-year period?

-Why haven’t you told the public that none of this proposed expansion would be permitted by the existing Crandon Park Master Plan and restrictive covenants on the land?

-Could it be that you’re “flying under false colors” and trying to “keep the public in the dark?”

VOTE NO: I urge my fellow citizens to Vote a resounding “NO” on the Crandon Park Tennis Center Expansion Referendum.

“It’s an appalling proposal for the expansive commercial exploitation of one of our most priceless environmental resources.” - Bruce C. Matheson.

In 1940, the Matheson family donated hundreds of acres of prime property on Key Biscayne – including two miles of oceanfront beach – to Miami Dade County to be “perpetually used and maintained for public park purposes only.” The expansive commercialization of Crandon Park by Miami Dade County is contrary to the spirit of the Matheson family gift. The family wants to perpetuate and protect this gift – and the integrity of Crandon Park- by marking sure voters have all the facts they need to make an intelligent decision before they’re asked to vote on this referendum.

I voted NO on this issue because it is my understanding that when the land was donated to the County there were certain restrictions involved that the County now wants to vacate.
That and the fact that "no public funds are involved" is a lie by omission. Why are we suprised???
