Salaries for The County Commission Chair Staff. By Geniusofdespair

The County Commissions Chairman's office has a separate budget. Joe Martinez pays 5 employees $271,198. This is in addition to the $288,645 salaries he pays his District Staff.

I am very concerned by the 3 FIU Law Student he has working under his purview.  They are assisting in revising our County Code.  If he is supervising this effort we are all in big trouble.

Interns have been hired for the county for years.... The executive offices used to use them. It gives the kids job experience but it also keeps adults out of a job... Those 3 slots could have been used for county employees being pink slipped.

I don't understand your concern regarding the FIU Law students. Having law school students intern during the summer is common practice at all levels of American government.

Knowing Joe, I bet those two female interns are hotties.

It is what they are doing. When you are an intern you work within strict guidelines from whomever hired you. If a City Manager hired them I would feel better. Joe Martinez always has an angle and I wonder what slant their work is going to take. I assume with him at the helm of their task it couldn't be good.

Why can't you ever think beyond the basic facts?

The interns are not just learning and the working of the government, like most do. they are rewriting our code. Are you people morons? Of course, we should be concerned with any product they produce. This is not a job for interns. This should be done in charettes around the county.

I was in "Government" for over 30years and we did use interns. The difference is that they were unpaid. They worked in areas of their career interests and gained valuablae experience and class credits for their work.

Further, they became famaliar with how governmen t works, the process, which in itself was extremely valuable. And they gained unbelievable contacts!

Contrary to what many believe, "unpaid" interns were not used to file and run errands. Rather, they were given valuable duties: writing reports, analyzing legislation and doing research.

Many were hired after graduation in their career areas.

It as a win-win for everybody!

What is your vandeta with Joe? The guy actually works. And his staff are all professional people with a lot of experience. I speak as a constituent, and I can say that all my complaints for District 11 have always been handled accordingly. I am more than glad to know that my tax dollars are well spent. Additionally, interns are paid next to nothing and they are not making any decision as to the ordinances in the county (you can always look this up on the county website, just like I did).

I also understand that this is a place for people to vent about their issues, but it isn't fair to mistrue information to make it look like something else.

Lastly, I never understood why anyone would underestimate the power of a beautiful and most importantly, intelligent woman. Joe's staff is attractive, but every person I have had the pleasure to meet is more than just good looking, they are competent and honestly, underpaid.

Joe Martinez has consistently voted wrong on every environmental issue I can remember. They always serve their district well to stay in office. They serve the rest of the County on global issues with a contempt. Your commissioner is a bully and if you watched him on TV you would see he is a sarcastic demeaning bully. I am sorry they took down the Jim DeFede "I am not a crook video". He took work on his house and a sweetheart land deal. Do your homework, I cannot distill 5 years of posts down to one comment.

I understand. But for someone who takes so much time of their day spending writing about another (90 posts) there must really be something more personal. I can see that you are environmentally involved an that is respectful but as a responsible citizen, taking it out on someone who doesn't have the same priorities as you might be somewhat wrong. I respect most of your work and I appreciate it but I think that your information is misconstrued and you should look more than just the surface and be more responsible when writing. Thank you,

Nothing personal against Martinez last coment.

Obviously you haven't read this blog much. May I suggest since you have so much feedback on what I SHOULD be doing, press the button on the upper right side of the page and start your own blog. Good luck with that...really. Then you can get people to question your motives when you don't have any.

A blog is editorial by nature.

I work in a huge govt office where we have large numbers of unpaid interns-- some high school, college annd especially law school. You better believe that the ones he has are connected to someone or something out there, though its no fault of theirs' if their brother in law is a contractor, vice mayor, nightclub owner or whomever may provide a nice hook-up for our little petulant chairman. On the other hand, do not despair about their "rewriting the code" that is for the County Attorneys to do--- I can guarantee you that they have a much more tedious and less impactful assignement... more along the lines of organizing the chapters and looking for duplications and redundancies, out dated references, penalties, comparing the code to different municipal codes and state statutes and the like-- you can bet your croqueta de jamon that they are not rewriting the county code
