Miguel Diaz de la Portilla: Picture of the Day. By Geniusofdespair

State Senator Miguel Diaz de la Portilla
What is this lobbyist reaching for? He already has his phone in his other hand. Miguel called South Miami Mayor Phillip Stoddard about FPL. Only trouble is, besides being an FPL lobbyist, he is the State Rep for South Miami. I was told he only lobbied in Broward for FPL. Hmmm.  I made a mistake and called him a State Rep. A reader corrected me. If all 3 Diaz de la Portilla's win, we will have Alex and Miguel as Senator and dumpy brother Renier as a State Rep. That would be political torture to Miami Dade County.

I think he likes you.

I bet he begs to differ. He is about to say that "it's State Senator, not State Rep."

Anonymous said...

He is not reaching for a phone, its in his left hand. Duck!

He is checking his list. Let's see:

Palmetto Bay and Cutler Bay are rolling over on FPL lick good little lemmings, check!

Now what do I do about those pesky elected officials in Pinecrest and South Miami concerned with protecting their residents from a catastrophic meltdown at Turkey Point.

This guy just ran two years ago. Does he have to run again this year in the new District 40? Is he opposed? Thanks to anyone who knows.

Geniusofdespair said...

Yes he is running again. He has two people running against him, but not sure if everyone is registered in the right districts yet.

It Appears that M DLP has recently switched to Senate District 37 His current seat is mmostly inside the new Snate District 40, the NEW 37 is Anitere Flores home turf.

??????

Yeah, I think he should be in the new SD 40, but who knows? Nobody is filed for 40 yet, but I think he will be making that change.

He's reaching for his OTHER cell phone.

He is way too connected with Palmetto Bay, not sure about Cutler Bay. Ask their city attorney who is her go to person on FPL issues. Someone should make a public record request for all communications regarding all things to do with FPL.

It is incredible conflict of interest for someone to hold public office AND work as a lobbyist.

As a politician, Miguel Diaz de la Portilla is supposed to represent MY interests as his constituent. As a lobbyist, his representation is for sale to the highest bidder.

The whole situation disgusts me. It needs to come to an end.

Reminds me of Fresen lobbying Coral Gables to put his family's for-profit charter school in a residential neighborhood. These legislators have way too much sway over municipal staffs, because they hold purse strings on unrelated issues. Should be illegal for them to monetize that power.

There is no monopoly on lobbying by the Republicans. Don't forget that this same lobbying issue was raised with former Broward Democrat State Senator Geller who was lobbying the district local officials.

The Palmetto and Cutler Bay officials really need to stop kissing up with this guy and join the fight against FPL. Why are cowering?

Mdlp is an Martindalle Hubbell AV rated lawyer who has successfully practiced law in Miami Dade County for 25 years. Florida has a citizen legislature which meets and pays a part time salary. Legislators are not all rich; some actually have to work for a living. No law or rule prohibits a legislator from practicing his profession. No law or rule forbids Mdlp from representing FPL or in client in South Miami or anywhere else in his district. Besides, there is nothing wrong woth asking scrawny Phil "Barney Fife" Stoddard to postpone an item for one meeting so that FPL can have a fair opportunity to present the Facts to the city commission.
Mdlp did a great job as a county commissioner and was terrific the last two sessions successfully leading the charge against prison privatization, stopping union busting and Supreme Court Packing legislation. He has the guts to oppose bad ideas even of his party's own governor propose it.
I think Genius is in love with this handsome, kind, and smart man but is frustrated that she can't have him to herself. By the way, Miguel is reaching for his business card in this picture.

Great picture. Miguel gets better looking each day.
I love this Dlp. He is such a sweet man .
Scrawny Phil and Grumpy Slow Lerner are just so jealous of him.

If we apply the logic of the Anon above, then Palmetto Bay's Mayor helmet hair Stanczyk and Cutler Bay's Mayor dapper Mac must be convinced by Mdlp that FPL's plans for transmission lines and more nukes will be beneficial for their areas. We are told that Mdlp personally took Mayor Stanczyk on a tour of FPL's plants. Stanczyk came back with a glowing report.

When you use your position in the legislature to increase the income you receive in your private work, that is called corruption -- in every other state. You just don't trade your power and influence for money, no matter how cute you are. Why don't you know that, DLP fan? That's what worries me. Why. Don't. You. Know. Right. From. Wrong.

What do you call it when elected officials retreat from their duty to look out for the public safety of their residents on important issues like FPL? That is called cowardice. Palmetto Bay and Cutler Bay officials need to step up and oppose the transmission lines and nukes. The mayors may not step forward, but there are still 4 other members for each city.

HOAs including Conventional Park have donated money to the efforts against FPL's plan yet governmental officials seem to sit idly by and allow bad things to happen.

hey, I don't begrudge anyone a living. As someone that lived in west kendall, this guy did right by us on many ocasions. I'm not a politico or a lacky but a realistic person that hates to see a good public servant being unjustly punished. It seems its trendy to bash politicians on this blog without all the facts. Well, then you will reap what you sow and you'll drive any good public servants out. As for Mr. Diaz de la Portilla, I know he did allot to manage the sprawl out in Kendall and he kept my neighborhood pretty clean. If he wants to work for FPL, its a good company and ecomonic engine for South Florida. seems totally legit to me!

you don't lobby where you govern...he lobbied where he governs...what don't you understand about that?

Anonymous said...

I understand perfectly, I read the article, and it mentioned a request for a derferral by the senator. I don't recall Mayor Stoddard saying one time in the article that the senator met with him or spoke to him on the merits of the item in question. Where's the lobbying? What don't YOU understand about that!! I think you need to write under another pen name, "genius" of despair doesn't suit you

Geniusofdespair said...

Thanks for the love letter Miguel.

Anonymous said...

Dlp never lobbied any of these mayors or councils. That's just a lie.

Anonymous said...

based on what conversation ? I bet you never spoke to all sides.

Geniusofdespair said...

This is my blog and I am not obligated to do anything or talk to anyone. I don't lie. Miguel skirts the truth. I talked to someone in government who felt intimidated by Miguel's actions. That is the end of story .

Anonymous said...

Elected officials should not be lobbyists. That is the end of story.

Anonymous said...

DPL-grasping at straws. Lol.

Anonymous said...

Anti dlp people are just envious idiots. Elected officials can and should lobby whoever the hell they want as long as it isn't their own legislative body. It's a free country.

Miguel DLP did show up with 4 other FPL lobbyists to speak against the Pinecrest Resolution opposing the FPL proposed Rate Increase. I was disappointed to see the state Senator who represents parts of Pinecrest, South Miami and Coral Gables shirking his legislative responsibility to represent his constituents by taking money to lobby for FPL on this issue. It is a HUGE conflict of interest and scummy as he'll for him to do. I was thwre Nd was disgusted. I am sorry I didnt tell him in front of everyone that I thought he had no business to be there. I was also told that he was reviewing the palmetto Bay proposed resolution as well, per the Mayor of PB. he has plenty of other counties he can go try to. Influence on plenty of other issues. His ethical duty to his constituents has been compromised. With this client and these constituents.

I heard that Maria de la Portilla, sister to all three is working for County government. Can anyone validate if this is true?
