Blast from the past: Lynda Bell and that Confederate Flag. By Geniusofdespair

This is my picture of the day.

Thought this was appropriate for Memorial Day Weekend. Lynda Bell, when Mayor, is seen here in a Veteran's Day parade. To the dismay of local Black residents. Bell claimed she never saw the flag. They, including Former Principal Rosemary Fuller, didn't believe her. Selective blindness? Does the picture tell the real story? Bell tried to distance herself from the contoversary but it didn't work.

What is the issue? The flag was displayed by a different group in the parade who are proud descendents of Confederate soldiers. Should they be ashamed that they are descendents of Confederate soldiers?

That group exists to "correct" the image of the Confederacy that they say is "consciously distorted by some in an attempt to alter history." Their web page says "The preservation of liberty and freedom was the motivating factor in the South's decision to fight the Second American Revolution." They are racist segregationists who try to provoke trouble by marching around with symbols of hate and supporting display of their flag of disgrace at schools, etc.

There is a huge issue. They should be ashamed, very ashamed. Who cares if they were actual descendents of confederate soldiers. How many people march in parades that claim to be actual descendents of soldiers of any other wars? Their organization is all an excuse to march for hate and lament about times gone by when they did not have to compete for jobs with actual black men (women of any race need not apply back then). The SAR this is not. Perhaps sons of 911 terrorists should get the next slot in the parade under that logic (or lack of) of the anon above.

And by the way, the SAR is a joke as well. Who cares that they have a distant relative who fought the war of independence. It may be an interesting footnote in their personal life, but hardly elevates their status above anyone else who currently lives and contributes to society in this country.

Note the sign: "Defending their honor..." what honor, the honor of enslavement? The honor of intolerance and bigotry?

A bunch of fat, bigoted old men, supported by a politician who supports hate and division.

The issue is that the Confederate flag is a symbol of a shameful period in our country’s history. To associate oneself with it, or to pretend it’s not there when it’s being waved in your face, is to tacitly condone what it stands for. Slavery, racism, rebellion. There is a reason why the Confederate flag is a favorite among hate groups like the KKK and neo-Nazis. Maybe you can explain why someone would be proud to be a descendent of a Confederate soldier.

You Mean proud descendants of human owners, Issue??

I agree. Let's try to lose this fake offended thing and butch up. So some redneck flew a flag that some find offensive. Nevertheless, it is a part of American history that some embrace and others revile. Same goes for Javi Souto.

So the guy was a dumbass and made comments that may offended Muslims. Shall I, as a white male American, protest whenever I see or hear somebody say "cracker?" I think not.

Can we move on to more important things in life?

Oh and by the way, most that fly the stars and bars are not descended of Confederate soldiers.

Most that fly the stars and bars are descended from married siblings.

7th Anon
So we should all embrace all parts of American history of unjust Laws?
We should come together over a part of American history that the stars and bars represents, Hanging someone, a U. S. citizen, due to the color of their skin or their religious belief?

Senator, Commissioner Javier Souto is a Public Official dumb ass, not just a plain private sector dumb ass. It was an accusation that was offensive, and it is on record.

Have you ever heard of a "Cracker" being hung, not considered human, not allowed to vote, put in a certain place on a bus, Not being able to be Served at an establishment, for being a "Cracker"??
Silence is a lack of action that implies Approval.

Perfectly depicts her polarizing relationship with Homestead's African Ammerican community back in the day.

BTW, it hasn't got any better.

Still no comment from Missy Lynda's camp.

Still disgusting after all these years.

If my memory is correct didn't Steve Bateman's campaign manager Jeff Porter set the parade line up? I believe he also funded a group running some pretty nasty TV ads also.
The area PULSE and NAACP representatives were all over this event rather quickly. The photo was posted on billboards in the poverty stricken areas of Homestead and the anti Bell forces had a great laugh at the genius of the plan. Simple but effective for Homestead's voters not known to be very bright. Those are the same voters who elected Shiver, Warren and Bateman to multiple terms.

Porter is going to call Bateman out now because Bateman has gone too far and is pissing off the actual power brokers. Epling, Jones, Marcus and Rosen are going to team up and fund Porter. Almost everyone has had enough and gotten enough from Bateman. Porter needs to be careful though the manager is warning of huge financial issues in the future because of Bateman's financial deals to his associates.

Of course there are no comments from the Missy Lynda's camp. They are all too busy whistling Dixie!

These signs look similar to the signs I saw at the commission meeting. Are they printed by the same company and organization? Lots of similaries in letters and style.

All of you need to grow up. It is a flag that was part of our history... Do you all ban British flags, Spanish and Mexican flags because they fought with us? They wanted to oppress us too.

By the way, today is the anniversary of the first black American Union troops being commissioned to battle in the Civil War.The 54th Massachusetts Infantry, the most famous African-American regiment of the war, leaves Boston for combat in the South.

I agree, but only to a certain point in regard to growing up and the flag being part of our history. The flag is part of Florida's history, but it is not the flag, but how the flag is being used that is troubling. This is not part of a historical display of "flags that have flown over Florida." Florida is one of the states that use the "stars and bars" in the current state seal and flag. The problem is the use with an actual confederate procession and an elected official who promotes hate be it against people of color or choice, then claims ignorance (a legitimate defense for the confederates, as they are quite ignorant) or plays victim.

And, by the way, the British, Spanish and Mexicans all became important allies and trading partners. People/descendants from those named countries are not wallowing in self-pity and loathing over past events. They have moved on. It is time for the old farts to get out of the long johns and decide that it is time to recognize the confederacy for what it was; misguided principles that led to the destruction of their ancestor’s property.

So grow up? I say I have. I choose to stay vigilant and never again.

The confederate flag is oppressive to African-Americans. Over 214,000 African Americans died in the Civil War. If the British Flag, Spanish, Mexican or any other flag is offensive then say something and do something.

Stars and Bars is the Flag of Terrorist, Terrorism, much like the Islamic Taliban Rule. The Burning Cross left in front of the house, the numerous Bombings, Houses Shot up, People pulled from their homes never to be seen again, lynching by the sheriffs and judges hiding under their Christian WHITE Sheets, All carried out under the Stars and Bars.
Terrorist Terrorism Stars and Bars.
Christianity and Islam so different yet so much alike..

Yes Jeff Porter was the MAC incoming chairperson who just so happen to be in charge on the parade lineup. At the last moment they put the SOCV in front of Bell.

Bell was too busy admiring the crowd admire her and was total clueless. I stood next to Rosemary Fuller while they SOCV walked by and guess what, she didn't seem to alarmed to me...

It was a set up planned by the Waldman Camp... I witnessed a meeting with all of them, and the plan was being put into action.

The MAC should of let Jeff go right then and there, however all the big boys...or should say good olde boys wanted to take Lynda down and so they did.

Homestead backwoods politics....
