I asked my usual question of an Apple Employee: Who is the Governor? I have reported in the past that I could never get the right answer in an Apple Store. This young employee actually knew. Why? Because he said he voted for Scott. I said "But he has hurt the environment so much." The Apple guy said, "I don't care about the environment." He added that he was a big supporter of off-shore drilling. I said "What about the Gulf oil spill?" He said: "That was an accident. Accidents happen." I should have said "Yeah, you were born."
Am I too mean?

Yes, it was a teachable moment and you blew it! It is our responsibility to try to open other peoples eyes, to always give them something to think about. by virtue of the fact he was working in an apple store, I want to assume he seeks knowledge, information. Why not give out web sites that people can explore new perspectives? It can't hurt to try.
Do you actually think I didn't try? Do I seem short on things to say? Ever? This was not a teachable person who would have gone to a website to check out a different view. He wore his views like an iron shackle...they weren't moving out of that pea brain.
I think that young people often have the views of their parents. Many parents do not teach their children how to think for themselves and are often punished for doing so. The "non-thinking" child will take on the parents' religion, political view, etc. There is also the guilt factor associated with the parents, which results in a fear of rejection.
Our 18 year old just got her voter' registration. She registered as a democrat. I'm hoping she made that decision on her own without too much influence from us, but, on the other hand, we did provide her with critical thinking skills and allowed her to disagree with our opinions. We also did not force religion down her throat or have her hold political signs during election time. (those 4 year olds with signs with dead fetuses are so cute!). Still, if she switched to an Independent, it wouldn't bother me. I have to admit, though, that I would be upset if she became a Republican, although I seriously doubt if that would happen.
People in their 20's grow and change. Hopefully this person, assuming he is in that age category, will meet someone special that will help "enlighten" him.
BTW, my daughter is dating a young Cubano who declared Nelson Mendela a "Communist", thus, not a good person. Don't worry, we are in the process of enlightening him.
