Mayor Gimenez Gets Tough on The UDB. By Geniusofdespair

The Miami Herald reported that Mayor Carlos Gimenez wrote a letter to State Legislators regarding Senator Bogdanoff's assault on the Urban Development Boundary and our Home Rule Charter - Here is the letter where he said: "It is my charge, as the leader of this County, to advocate for a process that will ensure proper stewardship of our environment."

How much do you want to bet this is all Miguel Diaz de la Portilla's doing? He said "he favors Bogdanoff’s amendment to even the playing field for property owners."

Read Gimleteye's GREAT post today  (below) on Bogdanoff and the broader issues of the amendment she is sponsoring. A big thank you goes to Senators Nan Rich and Gwen Margolis for supporting the UDB.

In 1996, staff recommended, and the county commission approved, the boundary be moved EASTWARD to put 740 acres of land outside the Urban Develop Boundary.

If staff were to ever suggest moving the UDB again to reduce the areas available for development, it might become impossible with a 3/4 vote requirement.

With the possibility of sea-level rise, better scientific information on surface and groudwater flows, and more exacting altitude mapping, the UDB may need to be revised - in in some areas, out in others.

A higher vote threshold may cut both ways - empowering a minority to have a veto over every decision is not a good public policy. The minority may not always be your friends.

Mayor Gimenez has found deep green religion! That's so awesome because now he will restore funding to the Environmental Resources Department (PERA) to enforce wetlands regulations, too.
With so much new environmental zeal, Gimenez needs to charter a plane to Tallahassee right now and save the day as our steward for the environment.

You realize everyone that lobbyist and lawyers are all over this blog writing comments.

I can only hope Gimenez gets that veto pen out when RTL Lynda Bell sponsors and ordinance doing away with DERM!

Too bad he forgot where it was in regard to the approval of the 8 1/2 sq mile CDMP amendment & Cemex!

So, do we know what the Farm Bureau lobby is up to?

Just when you think that the Broward group can't get worse... You remember that little miss Katy E lives in Broward and would love to be the newest FL representative.

To the last anon, the Farm Bureau is now Alice Pena of 8 1/2 sq mile fame! It really wants to make you barf.....Lynda Bell is her biggest cheerleader! As if stomache staple queen Katie Edwards wasn't as damaging as possible before she went back to Broward! I have to laugh at her "new" campaign, which basically re write her Hurricane of destruction to our Ag areas in Miami!

Miguel Diaz de la Portilla - where have the the flowers gone out of your heart - promoting sprawl, supporting the continued discharge of sewage into our ocean waters. Pretending you are working "pro bono" for developers because they are not being treated "fairly." You've got some explaining to do!

Market forces will dictate unless the broke government wants to finance the acquisition. Right now there is no market and government is broke. It's fixed by science of economics. Let it be.

Gimnez get's tough?! LOL! I will believe that when Gimenez starts campaigning against anti-UDB legislators and for lobbyist disclosure legislation.

What kinda trivial junk did that person say about MDLP? I can not see how you rank him as so Hot? He is the worst Senator in Florida. A creep who hates gays and advocated to end their rights. Democrats are not that shallow. If anything he should have his mouth duck taped and take up modeling. Oh Baby, your way off. This time we are sending him straight to Hollywood with the rest of his Brothers. That's where they belong right?

The legislature could take no other action than throw out this piece of what will go down in legislative history, as the most absurd amendment ever offered, at least in recent times for action in Tallahassee. That a Broward County legislator could step out of her boundaries is clear evidence as to the level people like this woman will go to get her way. What she was offered and by whom, to make this big of a fool of herself, we probably will never know. What we do know, however, is that she has no character and is someone who cannot be trusted.
Further, her action is a gross insult to the Miami-Dade State Legislative representatives and I would be curious to know what they think of about it. I wonder, did they know about it? Did she even inform them of it? If they did not know, why not and have they dealt with her in the most serious manner about the ramifications of her insult, not only to our State legislators but more importantly, to the residents of Miami-Dade County .
We also need to be diligent about which Miami-Dade legislators team with her to carry any future legislation in Tallahassee. Simply put, this woman is bad news.

Bogdanoff is just being a shill doing Diaz de la Portilla's bidding. BTW - Can anyone guess who is part Diaz de la Portilla's lobbying team?

We all know Carlos Jr. is.

And who said anything good about Miguel or Alex on this post....

I don't get our readers sometimes, they are in their own zone.

Bravo Carlos! Tell the developer's
lackeys how it is and should be!
And be sure to send a copy to the
chancellor of FIU in his apparantly isolated Ivory Tower so he abandons
his ill conceived plan to build
beyond the UDB. Doesn't he read the
papers or listen to the news in this
town? Surprising plan coming from
a quarter which should be in touch
with environmental concerns here. Maybe he is looking at Empire Builder Padron as a model; not good.

I am not a lawyer or lobbyist, but I do disagree with the idea of a 3/4 vote requirement. It does empower a minority of commissioners to control the decisions. In the future, an application to tighten the UDB may have little chance of passing due to the higher vote threshold. There are more sensible ways to reform the UDB process than raising the vote requirement to 3/4.

Well done Gimenez!
