Miami Dade County Commission on Women Should Do Their Homework. By Geniusofdespair

The board of The Miami Dade County Commission on Women (aka Commission for Women) should have done their homework before bestowing an award on Lynda Bell. Lynda, as former State chair of the Florida Right to Life group is a polarizing figure. She was unpopular in Homestead and voted out of office. She is still a member of the RTL group, and has sent excess money from her campaign account to the group in Altmonte Springs rather than finding a local needy group in Homestead. That is how she is concerned for her constituents (one reason she got the award). She also advocated for judges against gay adoption and a woman's right to choose (see graphic below).

I take issue with the Women on this Committee: Grace O'Donnell, Chair; Michelle Dunaj Lucking, 2nd Vice Chair; Sharon Kendrick-Johnson and Rosa Naccarato. I also want to mention the names of Commission Members who did not do their homework on Lynda Bell: Leah Blumenfeld, Marie Soeurette Eloi, Beverly Nixon, Kit Rafferty, Maria Roberts, Barbara Schwartz, Gloria Simmons, Tieesha Taylor, Marie Woodson, Mary Young, Mara Zapata, Dona Zemo. Also I want to NOT commend Laura Morilla. You have all cheapened the In the Company of Women Awards 2012.

They gave Lynda the award on March 21st for - Government and Law saying, Miami-Dade County Commissioner from District 8 and the first woman Mayor of Homestead.  Her concern for her constituents is exemplified by her focus on education, children, and a streamlined efficient government that still manages to address the needs of the community.

Lynda Bell has systematically been trying to undermine environmental laws in Miami Dade County. She is a one woman show of bad governing. Don't any of you women read the newspaper?

Someone should call feminist leader Roxcy Bolton who founded the group. Anyone know her?

What would you expect from an organization that gave cover to NAtacha Seijas, VNS?

Good post, G.O.D.

Aligning herself with the freak show known as Apostle Guillermo Maldonado and Prophet Ana G. should squash any misconception that Miss Lynda is ignoring needy people, and it's not like there's any women within her district that are "in need".

Also, she's listed on the Altamonte Springs-based Florida Right to Life website as an "NRL Delegate". Wonder how much $$$ that title costs?

It is beyond my comprehension why Bell continuously ignores the problems at home.

Maria Roberts hated Bell. If she hadn't moved she would be livid with this group.

You have not done your homework either: The CFW co-hosts the awards but the nominations are made by the community at large, and the recipients are selected by a panel that includes last year's winners and the event organizing committee - NOT the members of the CFW.

I have not done my homework... My ass. A group gives an award they are the responsible party. If the community said give an award to Daphne Campbell you wouldn't see it happen, the board would put up a stink. Don't hide behind bull.

Genius is right. The commission on women cannot give awards and then hide when someone complains, rightfully so. They put on the event, they have to monitor what is going on or take their name off the event. Lame excuse.

Nobody asked me if I wanted Bell to get an award. Who belongs to this 'community at large'? Not me or anyone I know would vote for Bell. Who exactly voted for her?

A great example why Miami is a third tier American city.

You need to understand the relationship of this group to the county to see why Bell gets an award. The county commission funds the commission on the status of women and all the other factional groups. County staffers get cushy "botellas" (no work jobs) at these groups. The STAFF arrange the award as a way to ingratiate themselves with the commissioners who pay their salaries. Makes you feel proud to be a tax payer, doesn't it?

Genius:
You are absolutely correct. Every women should resign from this group. If this is the best they can do for women its sure does not speak for women.
It just shows how money in Miami-Dade County can buy awards and it throws a light on any award given to elected officials.
Miss Lynda's chief of staff is certainly, working his magic. What next? NAACP Woman of the Year? LOL!!
