Former Mayor Horace Feliu, whom Stoddard decisively defeated in 2010, wrote that Stoddard, “illicitly recruited his impressionable FIU students to work on his campaign. With an alleged wink and a nod assuring a good grade, they went knocking on the doors of unsuspecting South Miamians, innocently spreading their teacher’s lies and deceptions.”Damn, that is mean...and also makes no sense.
I like Julio Robaina but for this election: I am going with Philip Stoddard, like I did in 2010. Julio had his stint as Mayor.

Stoddard has been a good Mayor. I like that he stands up to FPL.
Julio Robaina will be the next Mayor of South Miami only becuase the city hall needs to be clean-out.
the saddest part of the South Miami campaign season is how irresponsible the media coverage has been. there have been four candidate forums where the candidates have been able to distinguish themselves and their positions from each other. Unfortunately, the Miami Herald Neighbor's reporter, who looks like she is 19, cannot handle the story. it's unfair for the candidates and unfair for the voters.
I'd think there might be better reasons for supporting the incumbent mayor then some stupid letter by the ex-mayor. The truth is both candidates for mayor have some good skills and some problems--so the voters will have an interesting choice to make.
The dirty dealing goes in every direction. Bicycle Bob is an ass who is a neighborhood nuisance with converting homes to illegal college dorms. He speaks against development, but he does not care how he ruins a single family neighborhood be running hostels in them.
I think Mayor Stoddard is an honorable man, but he has failed to show the leadership to run the city in the face of the crazies. Julio Robinia was on the attack in words and deeds against FPL even before Stodard. You would count on Julio Robaina to take on FPL in Tallahassee. He stood up for the sfruit tree owners against the State on their stupid canker erradication program.
I am troubled by the fact that Mayor Stoddard has allowed the continued discrimination of the black areas by not pushing forward the city pool. It has been years. Let's get it done. It is for the kids.
Can't we all get along?
Stoddard's enemies have been brazen in their attacks. The latest is a claim that Stoddard "interfered with police work" when he simply questioned why cops might think they were supposed to prevent canvassing.
I agree: Bicycle Bob is an ass and he runs illegal boarding homes. There has been plenty of discrimination and pandering in every direction too.
As to the call by the mayor on behalf of his canvassing friend: that was unfortunate. South Miami is not an easy place to campaign. PEOPLE get so STRESSED out.

TOUGH choice on so many levels.
Another difference is that Julio Robaina only has a high school diploma. That troubles me.
Third Anon. Go ahead, blame the messenger. What does a reporter "looking like 19" has to do with anything? You are biased against people who "look" young?
By the way, the reporter's name is Christina Viega and I have read her articles. Despite how young she looks, she is a very good writer and understands the politics of the area. In fact, Christina is well liked by those of us who have dealt with her. She is attentive, she asks the right questions, she listens and then she writes what she sees and hears. She represents her paper well and we are lucky to have a reporter of her caliber keeping her ears and eyes open for us. So stop with the insults. It is very unbecoming.
This is exactly how ignorance raises its ugly head. When all else fails, attack and look around for someone other than youself to blame.
This election did not need to get so nasty. The city has
Done a great job in cleaning up it's inherited mess. Vote with your brain, your heart, your common sense. We are a small community, money should not decide issues. South
Miami the future is in your hands.
just having a high school diploma does NOT bother me, quite the contrary,....shows he didn't need further education, just like Bill Gates, etc. I've known many with that little piece of paper (degrees) that can't even spell.
The nastiness of this campaign should come as no surprise to anyone who follows South Miami Politics. It originates out of the offices of the South Miami Community News run by the Miller brothers who because of their real estate speculation in the City perpetually back a slate of the most corruptible candidates who will do their bidding. This year, they are really scraping the bottom of the barrel with their slate of a washed up career politician (Robaina), a convicted felon (Oliveros), and a political neophyte (Liebman)who hasn't voted in an election since 1999. Common since should direct anyone to not support anyone who is ever backed by the Miller machine.
At least the Herald has some commitment to journalistic principles. you will never see that in the Miller rag
the herald uses the same exact forumula for its election coverage of smaller cities. said city is quiet, peace-lvoiing place, but all ablaze with nasty, evil campaign stuff.
they cut and paste for gables, south miami, palmetto bay, north miami beach, aventura, doral, etc. .
the truth is that most of these dinky races are nasty. the smaller the stakes, the nastier the fight, as the saying goes. there was never a golden age of political discourse in south florida.
campaigns are rough and tumble. get over it.
all taht said, south miami has a horrible political culture. you have a handful of very vocal anarchists who hate everything. the mere thought of anyone having fun in their downtown just drives them crazy.
guys, move to pinecrest or palmetto bay if you want sprawling suburbia instead of a very nice, small-scale downtown area that yes, has lots of pepople in it, and yes, cars that drive to and from it.
An easy guideline might be to vote for someone who is born in Miami and raised in South Miami with a real love for the area, and deeply familiar with the issues there, not just particular interests.
Where's the love people? Ignore the dirt-bags; promote the honorable citizens who really care.
Go Stoddard!
-South Miami resident, 18 yrs.
I followed Julio's career in the legislature and I can tell you he is not equipped to lead. Yes, he voted the right way many times but when it came to legislation he was sponsoring he had to have it spoon fed to him because he didn't get it. One example of this was the last condo bill he sponsored. For a man who claimed to blue an expert he didn't even know that the bill he sponsored required for the first time in the history I the state that condo owners have contents insurance. This little morsel was tucked into his own bill by the insurance companies and he had no idea. The legislature had to come back in subsequent years to remove that particular section of law. Had he known what was on his own legislation it wouldn't have been an issue for thousand of condo owners for the years I took to fix it.
Phillip Stoddard is not perfect either but at least he ran for office for a reason other than just wanting to be elected again. Stoddard at an issue that motivated him and he has done good by the city in the years he has served.
Bicycle Bob Welsh's run for commission seat group 3
Is an opportunity for the city of South Miami to elect it's
Most knowledgable, honest, hardworking and caring
Commissioner in it's history. No one ever has done so
Much to alert the citizens of South Miami against fraud,
Corruption, overdevelopement and dishonesty than
Bicycle Bob Welsh. Over the last 14 years he could be
Found going door to door fighting those issues which
Were detrimental to the residents of South Miami. No one
Knows more, No one cares more. Please vote for Bob
welsh.
Try and sort out the rumors from the truth, then vote for the
Guy on the bike
