Erik Fresen did a Bad Job: Gambling Bill Dead in the House. By Geniusofdespair

The Florida House Subcommittee on Business and Consumer Affairs today, wouldn't move forward with the Destination Resorts Bill. They temporarily postponed it. The chair said if it is "Temporarily Postponed" there would be no opportunity to hear it before 2013.

Grace Solares gave a great speech against casinos. Thank you Grace. Here is a video of her speaking. It is choppy because the State of Florida's tape did not work correctly. It stopped intermittently. Even thought I watched it a few times, it didn't get better. This is as good as I could get.  Link to video.

Better luck next year Genting.

The Members of the committee are:

Bovo, Jr., Esteban L. [R]   Chair  (as you can see this list is NOT up to date with Bovo on it)

Ahern, Larry [R]
Artiles, Frank [R]

Fraidy cats.

Fresen is very unlikable. Genting just needs to find a more popular and charismatic advocate.

Next year or next session? Would they come back for a special session in order to sneak it in?

Would they try a Constitutional Amendment by petition drive for a voter referendum? As far as Representative Fresen or Lobbyist Fresen: the gambling industry needs to look for another House sponsor to advocate for them. Genting should also fire the brigade of lobbyist that they have hired.

Grace Solares did a great job. She spent her own money to fly to Tallahassee. Where were the 13 County Commissioners and the 5 City Commissioners? Watching Marlins games from the owners box?

Leave it to Grace to represent the residents of Miami.

Very good news! For now!

At least we have a year to get our stuff together to fight it. They will never let it go that easily. These people, the Genting people, want this really badly and will do anything to get it no matter who or how many they have to buy to get it. All the money they have spent? That was merely a downpayment. They will be back!

We need to be alert because this is not over yet by a long shot.

When Genting purchased the old 'Herald building, I suspect they never expected the backlash they are getting, but it has to be louder and clearer, and the lobbying politicians supporting them need to be voted out of office; take the power away from these crooks!

We cannot allow foreign, millionare investors and business entities to buy land here and, much less, to build mega casinos that will negatively impact us. The 'Herald deal also includes portions of public land.

As people get educated, I hope they can understand the negatives of all of these components.

Bring back the "real" jobs; For example, the city of Hialeah has rows and rows of abandoned factories and commercial space, close to the railroad tracks, airport, major corridors and seaport. Cities all over the U.S. are in the same condition. Let's give American manufacturers tax breaks and pay a little more for goods, and we can be better off. Bring the call centers back, too.

AND Tell Genting to go home!

I am not in favor of casinos but when you said mega casinos will negatively impact us, I had to think for a minute. Look around we already are America's Most Miserable City, we have the dumbest voters, the most crooked politicians and the worst housing market. Let's throw in the poverty levels around here and the environment going to hell and you say it's going to get worse with mega casinos?
I didn't know it could get worse but I suppose you're correct, now the question is how low will we go?

quoting Millie above:
"We cannot allow foreign, millionare investors and business entities to buy land here" ....
What do you think made Brickell Avenue in the 80's and 90's? All the rich millionaires from Venezuela and all over the globe.
Foreign investor's monies have always been good for Miami's economy. If it was you selling the real estate property, I am sure you would have no problems accepting top dollars from not only foreign investors, but even from space aliens.

WHERE EXACTLY DID I SAY MEGA CASINOS WOULD NEGATIVELY IMPACT US IN THAT POST?

What I have been saying all along is --10% is a bad deal and it is the wrong place. Don't put words in my mouth.
