Carl Hiaasen: Best Read in the Miami Herald Today. By Geniusofdespair

Columnist Carl Hiaasen weighs in with some humor on the birth control controversy or as most Democrats think -- a non-issue:
Ignoring years of public-opinion polls, the GOP is boldly marching backwards into the 1960s to question whether contraception is a legitimate health-care benefit.

Hiaasen says further:
"Now, after decades of having their stance against birth control ignored, Catholic bishops have finally found a receptive audience: Republicans in Congress."

No one has a problem with contraception. People have a problem with a socialist dictator who wants to dictate the terms of private health insurance contracts without constitutional authority and insists that consumers be provided with certain commodities for "free."

Jack if you call Obama a social dictator you will be deleted. We don't print lies.

Keep the Government out of my Medicare. Obama keeps pushing Medicare why? We dont want that socialism .

Can you please explain how Obama will be providing contraception for "free?" Will he be using a magic wand or a genie?

Jack, any insurer would prefer to provide contraceptive benefits to reduce their pregnancy and childbirth coverage costs. That's a good business decision. What we are dealing with in this debate is protection of women's rights versus protection of religious authority.

Ross, if it's a good business decision, why on earth is it being forced on them? And where exactly does the president get the authority to do that under our constitution?

protection of women's rights? where are women having a problem finding contraception? it's available at every drug store, convenience store, gas station and supermarket with no questions asked.

Keep the government out of my medicare?????

Where does he get authority? Under the constitutions commerce clause. Right to regulate interstate commerce. Congress passed the healthcare bill, the executive branch institutes the CONGRESSIONAL healthcare bill.

The part of this controversy that I find amusing is that this "directive" about birth control is not dogma, in other words you can change it. It is a misinterpretation of the Bible's passage about Onan. The Church hierarchy, as well as those versed in Catholic theology, know this. I am amazed that nobody has looked into the origins of this idiotic rule.

You know what I hate more than anything the Republican word they made up for the congressionally passed health care bill. Like right to life, more accurately anti abortionists, I find Obamacare offensive. I am not big on adopting or pushing Republican talking points, they irritate me. Language is important so use Republican speak at your peril here.

Not sure what the problem with the term Obamacare is. Isn't Obama and his supporters proud of his healthcare program?

It is the affordable healthcare act. You are using Pub speak. I don't like talking points from pubs over and over. Don't be such a tool.
