Aurdrey and Jean: I Want to Have A Word With You Both. By Geniusofdespair

Commissioner Jean Monestime, I wasn't so happy when Joe Martinez disrespected you over the Head Start vote. It is only fair that I point out, that you and Commissioner Edmonson are being disrespected again.

FIU wants to fill 350 acres of wetlands for fairgrounds way, way out -- on the other side of the UDB line -- away from your districts so that your constituents won't be able to get there and more importantly, won't be able to get jobs there. Did anyone even consider looking for a site in either of your districts?

It sucks that they haven't even thought to bring your districts a good project. Why are your districts always left out? Barbara Jordan has the Stadium. Moss has the zoo complex, agriculture and Homestead Air Force Base, Suarez has the waterfront. Barreiro has the port and the baseball stadium.  Bovo has Hialeah Park. Diaz has the lake belt. Sosa has the airport. Complexes bring jobs to the district. These fairgrounds would be a big boost to the economy in one of your districts, don't let them bamboozle you into putting it out in the middle of nowhere. Get your district a good project for once. Fight for these fairgrounds.

Why do the Western Commissioners rule the roost? Get some balls and demand your fair share.  (also see Gimleteye's post on the Fairgrounds)
Does this look like a central location?

Nice thought. The park at Homestead Air Reserve already hosts a very well attended rib fest so folks will come "all the way " down there...Why do we have to continue the westward march ? (That was a rhetorical question, we all know why and the real agenda..)

Geniusofdespair said...

How many people from Monestime's and Edmonson's district went to the rib fest?

How about Biacayne Landing? That would be a perfect place for the Fairgrounds. They already have parking there.

Remember when they started interviewing for the Marlin's Stadium and Spanish was required? What did Barbara Jordan think was going to happen? Her outrage was a laugh. They took the requirement out on paper. We all know it was still there for the jobs. Lets face it. There are no jobs in Miami Dade if you don't speak Spanish.

I've met people in Audrey's district whom have never seen the Atlantic Ocean.

I've met people in most of the Commission offices that have never been to the Everglades.

The Steel Bridge is close enough to Everglades National Park boundaries. Miss Lynda's intamately familiar with that little piece of paradise...

Not understanding this steel bridge comment. Elaborate.

Finally, a practical idea for development of the Poinciana Industrial Park. This is the site where that shyster from Boston - Stackhouse - was going to build a Medical Arts Campus.

The Youth Fair would be a great fit in this part of town...go Audrey and Jean!!!

Completely agree. Good post, G.O.D.!

POINCIANA INDUSTRIAL PARK! BRILLIANT.

They don't want draw people to these districts. Let's face they will remain segregated unless the commissioners become more aggressive with the Hispanic majority.

Luv the Bait...but they dont give a F about their districts!! The Western Commissioners will just share their rewards of graft!

Geniusofdespair said...

I don't believe that.

Someone just emailed that they could have orchids shows when the fairgrounds are not being used. I think this idea is looking better and better.

We definitely need to look inside the urban area for a suitable site for the Fairgrounds if they are to move at all.

I think FIU needs to stay within their boundaries or focus development on their other campuses like the nearly vacant Engineering center just north of the main campus.

The difficulty in relocating the fair is the need for a big chunk of land. The Fairgrounds take up about 100 acres including the open field parking lot.

In the districts represented by Monestime and Edmonson, there are few parcels that big.

There's the Westview golf course which is about 80 acres, but I doubt the neighbors would be thrilled to have a fairground there, but that's about it. Miami Dade College north has about 250 acres of land but I'm sure they want to keep it a college, not a carnival.

Anyone else know of any big plots of land in the City of Miami or north central that could accomodate the fair?

What about re-development. We knocked down the old arena. There isn't anything in their districts that could be dispensed with? You can't turn the areas around without change.

What about around the Homestead airbase? There is county owned land there. They shouldn't have to destroy wetlands. Just sell boots with the tickets.

The advantage of Poinciana is that it is accessible by Metrorail. You don't need all those acres of open parking lot to accommodate the patrons. Plus, you could provide shuttle service from the Northside Shopping Plaza...

Or, maybe consolidate the site with the Northside Shopping Center and have the Youth Fair Facilities span 79th Street...

Someone should get this moving...

Or they can use the opa locka flea market the place is a dump

What about FIU placing it's medical school in one of the two districts you mention. That will surely create full time jobs. The majority of a Fairground's jobs created will be event driven jobs.

It also places FIU's medical school closer to the hospital district.

Give the job to staff and man the Dade County Fair at Poinciana Park to US Century Bank and Ocean Bank board directors.

What's wrong with a more compact Fair Ground that would fit into Poinciana Park? It would not only attract Miami-Dade citizens to the park, it would also expose visitors to how the other 99 percent live. That wouldn't be a bad thing at all. Who says that kids going to the Dade County Fair in school buses should only see strip malls filled with Medicaire fraudsters and McDonalds? This is a very, very good idea.

For kids in the Poinciana Park location, it could be like a stay-cation.

Genius, This is one of the best ideas I have heard in years! I hope some of the powers that be will jump on it and make it happen.

Continuing to locate bits and pieces of so-called economic development in this area has proven disasterous. This is a bold idea that will bring vitality, recognition and substantial economic development to an area that has been long crying for leadership.

Thank you Genius!

Glad you like the idea...now readers, lets pass it on to the commissioners.

the bridge is where kids go to drink, party, boink and in areas of the area, strip cars....

Poinciana is less than 30 acres among scattered and disconnected sites. The idea is interesting, but the location needs some tweaking.
