Young Fresen and the growing backlash against casinos in Florida ... by gimleteye

You knew, just somehow, the Genting casino would get tied to the war against terror. I heard a radio clip, repeated in this morning's Herald, where Erik Fresen -- Miami-Dade GOP chair and state legislator who is leading the plan to "rationalize" full scale casinos in Florida-- talk about how the "hydration" sought by Miami-Dade business leaders in favor of economic development tied to casinos turned to "water boarding".

What was Fresen thinking? Is he obsessed with GOP talking points, or, does he have other people thinking for him? Water boarding? It could be there is a kitchen cabinet of GOP pollsters and message framers advising young Fresen. GOP leaders, after all, have been on the defensive for years about their leaders (Bush) endorsing water boarding at prisons like Guantanamo Bay. Water boarding: what images does that summon?

Yes, for example, we want casinos so the sound of slot machines can remind us of trying to breathe underwater? Why summon the metaphorical value of water boarding linked to something-- gambling-- that Republicans desperately want? Why not say, for example, that the downtown developers were looking for a little religion (just one or two big casinos) but instead got drowned in ecstasy of Jesus Christ?

Fresen said of the massive Genting plan described by Architectonica in scale drawings, "It went from hydration to water boarding." Why not say, "it went from Sunday at church to mandatory attendance seven days a week"?

Or, that business leaders were looking for in vitro fertilization but instead got triplets? To say you are looking to hydrate but got water boarded instead? Soon enough all those good Christian church-go'ers who support the GOP are going to be demanding that Fresen be water boarded for this escalating controversy. Not so good for young Fresen and the growing backlash against casinos in Florida.

Well, on the upside, at least Eye on Miami was credited by the Herald today in reporting Fresen's IRS Liens!

I formally changed my independent voter status to Republican so I can vote in the Primary's for any GOP Candidate other than who's in office now! They all stink and are so out of touch with the electorate!

I like that Fresen said he didn't know about the liens. How do you not know about income tax liens? Especially since there were 2--one from 2004 and another from 2007?

Fresen saying he didn't know about IRS liens is like Herman Cain not knowing the relationship he had with that woman was sexual.

What was Fresen thinking? That is the point. He doesn't think.

I am Republican and I want that man to resign his position with the Miami-Dade County Party. No way can he stay. I am tired of being connected to him through his chairmanship which most of us do not want. What a disgrace to us Republicans.

Mr. Fresen, if you are reading this, RESIGN.

No matter, I am going to write to the Party about this. You will not continue to bring us down to your level.

Thanks Eye on Miami. When I read the article in today's paper I was so glad to see you credited.

You do such good work for the community and that is why I participate in this blog.

Love you and thanks again.

Your constant rantings about the Republican Party is getting monotonous.

One would think we are monsters just waiting to punce on the poor and take them for everything they have. You would also have us believe that we are monsters who would dare to want terrorists get what they give. Do you see us beheading anybody?

It is people such as you who attempt to divide the people every chance you get. I was once a Democrat. I labored in the trenches for the Democrat Party at the highest levels but that was not good enough. When they discovered I didn't agree with them on every issue, they started sinking their teeth in me every chance they got. But what they did not realized nor understand, is that I consider myself an intillegent woman, with my own ndividuality who will determine whatis right for me. I don't need anybody tgelling me how to think. own mind on any given subject and, nobody will ever force me how to think. I view that as an insult.

I am a minority, but walked out on the
Democrats more hurt than anything after working for them for them in the trenches for decades. I finally told them I would become a Republican and I would be a dangerous Republican, just as I was when I was a Democrat working for them to exhaustion. So here we are.

You use the one statement from this disguting man to bite us. What are we discussing here? Gambling in Miami. That's what. Do you think Democrats have all the answers on gambling? Do you think Democrats are the only ones that abhor the gambling nightmare about to invade Miami? Does not our Constitution give us the right to think and be whatever we want to be? Or would you rather see us as the children of Hamlin following the pied piper to our distruction? I come to this blog with an open mind and have never degraded any Party. But you just don't seem to let up. How many times must we tell you we are disgusted with Fresen and his compulsive casino pomposity?

You need to understand that we have a multitude of serious problems in Miami and we need to come together to fix them. It will take Democrats and Republicans working together as a team and, for the good of our shared communities to fix it.

Your desire to divide and conquor is very distasteful and damaging. It will get us nowhere to fixing what is wrong with Dade County.

There is something very wrong with the person who commented prior to me. She does not understand anything. If she was a patient of mine I would work very hard to help her out.

Anybody heard Jeb's take on Genting?

Is selective apostasy contagious?

To prior Anonymous, it is not necessarily about the Republicans. It is about the clones they support and put on the ballot. I'm not sure Fresen or Rubio or Rivera or any one of a number of others have ever had an original thought in their minds, let alone been true leaders.

We do have a multitude of problems in our area. To solve them, we need people with original and achievable ideas that are willing to put the community before themselves. I don't see that in too many politicians these days.
