Proposal for Expansion of Stupid County Sign Ordinance. by Geniusofdespair

Making ordinances to benefit one or two landowners is plain stupid. This ordinance due for first reading Dec. 19th,  adds the pink area below to the current area of the Mural Sign District in the City of Miami.

Prime sponsor Bruno Barreiro.
Peter Ehrlich of Scenic Miami says of the  proposed expansion:
"The proposed legislation will allow disgusting mural ads to go west of I-95 and well west of the downtown core. As if 19 illegal LED billboards are not enough, now Commissioner Barrerio has been lobbied to expand the boundary for mural ads. This proposed expansion of the mural ad borders is nothing but pandering to a well connected property owner who wants to deface his property while distracting residents and tourists. All while harming our scenic beauty.

It is time for the Board of County Commissioners to say No. Enough is enough. They must show respect for our scenic environment.

This is to benefit Marty Fine, the 80 year old former land use attorney who has hired Felix Lasarte to lobby on behalf of PARK TOWERS ASSOCIATION LTD. (see Map) for this ordinance. The apartment building is within the proposed new boundaries near Lummus Park.

The previous Miami-Dade County Planning Director rightfully denied an earlier request to allow this western expansion. Correctly, he denied the request because disgusting mural ads are incompatible with the low rise historic neighborhood west of I-95. This neighborhood houses the historic Lummus Park."

Bruno Barreiro, it figures. We have to get rid of that guy.

Murals? Does that mean they will have sky high signs visible from I95?

This is an affordable housing project if it helps the owners by providing necessary funds to keep the project affordable, so be it. This building is an elderly housing project. I guess you rather the building be sold and turned into a loft of some sort for richie riches?

This legislation is another violent attack on our scenic beauty. More disgusting ads on sides of buildings? More billboards covering windows of paying tenants?

County Commissioners should just say Hell No.

Have him save his money by not paying lobbyists and apply it to his profits.

Trust me, affordable housing developers make plenty of bucks, the Wolfson and Carlisle and other affordable housing people get government money too or else they wouldn't be doing it. I don't feel sorry for developers trying to turn a buck, they know how to without littering the landscape with mega ads. Why shouldn't affordable housing people also get views without ads? Are nice views only for- as you call them - "richie rich" people? Should we allow crap in affordable neighborhoods?

Lobbyist Felix Lasarta conned Bruno the Dim into pushing this scheme to get more money for the octogenarian Marty Fine. Marty has no intention of sharing any of the proposed revenues from the distracting ads. In fact, Marty intends to cover his tenants windows so they can't see Lummus Park.

Meh I'm ambivalent to it. Maybe it can stimulate business for some locals...

Forcing billboards on buildings only make neighborhoods look cheap and tawdy. Sort of like neon signs telling tourists, "We hate our city. Go ahead trash us."

I hope Barbara Bisno and the folks at Scenic Miami-Dade get together to fight this proposed legislation.

Anyone see the illegal signs on the drug club Space? Where is Code Enforcement?

When will County and City Commissioners realize that when they approve more distracting ads on buildings and within neighborhoods that they diminish Miami and Miami-Dade County?

Who values our unblemished views?

Commissioner Dennis Moss founded the County Image Advisory Board. Maybe Moss can get this obvious scam stopped?

Today, December 19, 2011 Xavier Suarez and Jean Monestine voted to pass this piece of crap proposal at First Reading.

What happened to Xavier Suarez? He's a disappointment.

Marc Sarnoff and Bruno Barrerio are great champions to the billboard companies.
