We thought it odd that we got a change of address for someone who has never lived at our address since we had been here 7 years. We also know the previous 2 owners. Immediately in our mind we thought IRS scam.
The person wanted to make the check an electronic transfer according to the IRS letter that came with the check. When that didn't work out (see IRS letter below), in a panic he must have tried to put through a forwarding address before the check was mailed here. The only problem was, the post office sent a letter ASKING us if it was okay to forward the mail. I don't think the guy banked on that. Also, I think it was bad luck for this Michael Kane, that he picked out an address of very, very suspicious people.
We told the Post Office that we DID NOT request mail to be forwarded. At the time of the Post Office letter, we had in our possession for one day the $3,517 Treasury check this guy was trying to get a hold of.
Well to make a long story short, no one cared enough. We still have the check and we don't know what happened, like whether the IRS cut a second check. There is an article in the Herald about someone stealing a tax refund. Maybe this is a new trendy scam.

Genius -- Here's hoping none of your readers makes a complaint to the USPS Postal Inspector. Opening mail addressed to someone else is a federal crime. Your post is your confession. You should have written "Return to Sender" on the envelope and popped it back in the mailbox.
Remember. You have the right to remain silent. Then again, maybe you can give an inside look at the federal prison system from the inside.
Bureaucrats have no party. They just do... or do nothing sometimes based on rules.
It came to my correct address. How do I know the name was not the mistake? I had to open it to find out if it was my income tax refund with the wrong name.
I'll take my chances with the feds...I heard Federal prisons are very pleasant.
You should have cashed the check.

The person on the check probably had their id stolen. But how come Obama has to come into play? I'm a black guy in Miami and i'm not a fan of the Pres... But when will we realize that they, Repubs. and Democrats, all play for that same team. We as people need to get out of this divide and conquer scheme, unite and take all these govt crooks down.
White people you all gonna have to leave that racism behind if you really want to make a change. Those racist view are keeping us divided and we will never take back what is rightfully ours until we unite.
