FDOT and Art Basel Miami: The traffic nightmare about to unfold ... by gimleteye

Enough is enough on eastbound 195 between Interstate 95 and Biscayne Boulevard. For weeks I've been traversing the worst traffic nightmare in Miami-Dade County. This is the result of FDOT closing down the eastbound North Miami Avenue exit (marked in red) for "road work", leaving only the Biscayne Boulevard exit to handle traffic (in black). Disaster. If you have tried to get to Wynwood, the Design District, or Midtown from 195 eastbound, let FDOT know. And it is going to get worse. A monumental traffic disaster if FDOT doesnt wrap things up SOON. In scarcely more than one month, hundreds of thousands of visitors will descend on Art Basel Miami. Many will be heading to the satellite shows in Midtown to the galleries in Wynwood, and to the Design District. Work (whatever is going on, isn't clear to me! And why aren't crews working 24/7?) is proceeding at a Miami-Dade glacial place. This blog post serves notice to Miami movers and shakers, get off your asses and push FDOT to finish whatever they are doing, because whatever it is, is already the county's worst traffic nightmare.

Last night it took twenty minutes to get off the Biscayne Boulevard exit from 195, while watching dozens of drivers cut in. Some of our readers take offense at our regular criticism of the PAC and downtown's hopeless exit (also Biscayne Boulevard) off 395 Eastbound. If FDOT can't wrap it up within the next month, I guarantee there will be hell to pay and it won't be just Eyeonmiami complaining. There will be accidents and traffic pile-ups and howling you cannot believe.

I-95 North to 62nd Street exit is really the only option at some times in the day. Huge F-up.

I am in complete agreement. From the start of this "detour" it has been handled poorly. The Biscayne Blvd exit should be re-painted so that there are two exit lanes as there is enough room. There should be a police office directing traffic on Biscayne at 36th street during the evening rush hour.

I am amazed at how many times there is a police car with an officer inside parked on the grass at 38th and Biscayne during the evening rush hour. The officer does nothing to help anyone.

hey! i see swampspace in the photo. This roadwork is another man-made billion dollar disaster. There will be accidents caused by 'me firsters' cutting into the exit line. There will be huge delays but FDOT could not care less. Don't expect any mayor improvements when the work is completed.

The Art Basel crowd is way too chill to worry about this sort of delay. There are no "me-firsters" in the Art Basel demographic.

And wait until the Port of Miami tunnel trucks full of God-knows-what dirt start crossing the McArthur and I-95 to get to Virginia Key to dump the hundreds of thousands of cubic yards of tunnel debris. That 600 trips a day fro two years and they are starting in November - right in time for Basel traffic and the season on Miami Beach. The fact they are working from 10 p.m to 6 a.m. only makes it worse as that's prime party time in Miami.
FDOT - what are you thinking? Local officials, do you even care?
