Breast Cancer Awareness Month. By Geniusofdespair

Since it is Breast Cancer month I will talk about Ovarian Cancer...it doesn't have its own month, but it is a good time to remember. There were about 39,520 deaths this year from breast cancer and 15,460 are projected from ovarian cancer.

Singer/songwriter Laura Nyro would have been 64, two days ago was her birthday, instead she died at 49 in 1997 of ovarian cancer. Her mom died of the same cancer also at 49. Laura wrote her first song "When I Die" when she was 17. Nyro also wrote Wedding Bell Blues, Blowin' Away, Stoney End, Stoned Soul Picnic, among other songs.

Also Died of Ovarian Cancer:
Sandy Dennis, Oscar-winning actress (died at age 54)
Ann Dunham, mother of Barack Obama (died at age 52)
Madeline Kahn, Actress/comedienne (died at age 57)
Coretta Scott King, Widow of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. (died at age 78)
Gilda Radner, Actress/comedienne (Saturday Night Live) (died at age 42)

See the Lyrics of "When I Die" and I included a video of Nyro singing it:

I'm not scared of dyin'
and I don't really care
if it's peace you find in dyin'
Well then let the time be near
if it's peace you find in dyin'
When dyin' time is here
just bundle up my coffin
cause it's cold way down there
And when I die
and when I'm gone
there'll be one child born
and a world to carry on
My troubles are many
they're as deep as a well
I swear there ain't no heaven
and I pray there ain't no hell
swear there ain't no heaven
and pray there ain't no hell
but I'll never know by livin'
only my dyin' will tell
And when I die
and when I'm gone
there'll be one child born
and a world to carry on
Give me my freedom
for as long as I be
all I ask of livin'
is to have no chains on me
all I ask of livin'
is to have no chains on me
and all I ask of dyin'
is to go naturally
And when I die
and when I'm gone
there'll be one child born
and a world to carry on

Laura Nyro was such a loss to us all, a most memorable singer.

So many things on this horrible checklist of things to stay on top of. Not that it's a bad thing but I was getting a little myopic on Breast Cancer Awareness Month. So thanks.
