Patricia Ireland What the Hell Happened to You? From Hero to Mute. By Geniusofdespair

Patricia Ireland, do you believe in anything anymore?

Patricia Ireland was once the President of the National Organization of Women (NOW), from 1991 to 2001, Now Patricia Ireland is living in Homestead apparently laying low engulfed in her husband James Humble's shadow. Her days of preserving a woman's right to choose are sooo over!

Ireland's hubby, James Humble is much more active in the community. In fact I caught up with him in Homestead where he was having a meeting with the Mayor and with, of all people, his County Commissioner Lynda Bell. You have to get the irony of this. Lynda Bell is a commando against 'choice' for women while Ireland was one of the country's loudest voices for choice. Abortion rights is ghastly to Lynda.  In fact, Bell was the President of the State group Florida Right to Life. When she had extra campaign funds from her Mayoral campaign in Homestead, Lynda sent them off to the group in Altamonte Springs instead of giving it to needy groups in her City. According to their website Lynda Bell is still the President of the Miami chapter of Florida Right to Life. Lynda has been governing Patricia for years, first as Homestead Mayor and now as County Commissioner. Have you heard a peep out of Ireland? I would move or slit my wrists if I were Ireland -- but it appears she doesn't care!!

Patricia Ireland actually campaigned against Katy Sorenson at one time. Katy was one of the most supportive politicians in Florida of a woman's right to choose. What is wrong with Ireland? Her husband's doing? Is she a "stand by my man?"  I would think that if Ireland had an ounce of her old self left in her she would have done anything she could to keep Lynda Bell out of the County Commission. But ONLY being the good wife apparently is paramount for Ireland now.

I fondly remember having a drink with Betty Friedan and Frances Lear. Thank God they aren't here to witness the deafening silence of Patricia Ireland in Miami-Dade County on choice.

The last time I saw Patricia Ireland was in a courtroom, she was trying to stop the Natacha Seijas recall. Ick.

More on Ireland.

Money will always trump principle. Ireland milked the NOW cause as far as she could, but now she and her husband are cashing in at the expense of our future.

She's married to Humble? Are you kidding? He always looks as if grease (slime) is pouring off of him.

I was aware she was involved in the development projects on Krome Avenue, I think Krome Gold or maybe Parkland.

Can you imagine a dinner conversation with her and Bell! OMG. How on earth did Ireland end up here, with Humble, from NOW. I'd buy dinner for Bell & Ireland at the restaurant of their choice (as long as I could sell video rights)!

I moved down here to get away from the City, not to marry a hillbilly paving over wetlands and destroying environmental protections! What was or is she thinking (or perhaps, not thinking).

Humble is such a chauvinist, as well, that is the most unbelievable part. Him and his bff Loser don't have a lot of respect for women at all, not from my view at least.

To the Anon above - buy dinner for Bell and Ireland, at the restaurant of their choice? Not going to happen.

Bell doesn't believe in choice and no one likes the choice Ireland has made.

Actually, Bell does believe in choice: her right to choose for you.

3rd anon! That could have been a CATO post...........How true in the irony.

I am surprised as you are over Patricia Ireland's silence. She took the time to be against Sorenson for some unknown reason. I hope people don't canonize her without knowing what Ireland's behavior is when she is not being paid.

She supported Mr. Steven Sapp against Sorenson

Ireland is an opportunist. She made her name in NOW, first at the local level and later at national. She campaigned hard against Redland incorporation before returning to live out her days on the farm. She is stealth, never joining the debate but working behind the scenes. Her positions are almost always opposed to mine. I don't know if she has always been viscious or if Humble corrupted her. She is a strong women, so I suppose she is rotten all on her own. I have no use for her because she is a dirty fighter.

yo...person I deleted: She was at the trial representing a union to stop a recall. Cancer then? She has been silent on Bell for years. Cancer then? Was she battling cancer when she supported candidates against Sorenson years ago?

Don't use cancer as a cop out for her silence in Miami Dade county. She isn't the same woman I once admired. Clear and simple.

Ireland has cancer??

I can't help but agree with you on one thing. Had she spoke against Bell, it could have given us the votes we needed. Wasn't it about 300 votes needed? She could have gotten Gene 500 to 1,000 votes with an endorsement. Too late.

I am sorry she is sick and wish her well anyway.

Wishing you recovery Patricia. Also did not hear you had cancer.

She tried to stop the Seijas recall because it was a job. She was pro choice because it was her job. Don't give her credit for having scruples too, that is not part of her job.

I have not seen Ireland in a zillion years.... Although if I were married to Humble, I would not want to be seen with him either.

Her accomplishments at NOW were impressive, I can't imagine can be done without some deep ethical commitment; see: http://www.now.org/officers/pi.html
She even wrote a book, "What women want" knocking the conservative climate. And she campaigned against Sorenson? "Being paid" is no excuse. I am a lawyer and I do not take cases/clients that are working against what I believe. That's only an excuse if you're a criminal lawyer, even the guilty rapists are entitled to a defense, and his attorney cant be assused of condoning rape. But working as a lobbyist, advocate for causes that are a against one's strongly expressed beliefs? ... well, ill or not, Ireland is open to criticism.

Patricia Ireland is not a feminist at all. She is all about power. I was a member of NOW in Dade County FL when she was there. After an election did not go the way she and Janet Cantebery wanted it to they turned their backs on their sisters, pulled a power play and took over the organization. Much like the controlling and power hungry groups we were fighting against. As a result many of us left the organization forever. Her conduct was despicable and not in the least bit supportive of women and surely no as a feminist. This was many years ago but I never forgot it. It hurt me deeply to see our once highly respected leaders conduct themselves in that way. Really, it is all about POWER.

Reading these posts, I can't help but think that not many of the posters even know Patricia or her husband at all. I have found both of them thoughtful people who wish to better our environment and public policies when they can. I really dislike the personal attacks on James Humble who is not a 'hillbilly' but an accomplished artist and environmentalist. If anything, Patricia has had more influence on his thinking on feminism than any other person. They both compliment each other's lives in ways most of us who are in long-term relationships, aspire to. Hoping Patricia is feeling much better physically.

She and her husband back LYNDA BELL the National Delegate to Right to Life. She was president to the Florida Chapter. Patricia did not speak ONE WORD against this candidate. She was mute when she needed to be vocal.

My last post wasn't put up here for some reason.
Right to life V. Right to an abortion.

I guess this blog only agrees with one and loathes the other?

It's a shame she is on TV now bashing nuns who help old poor people. When will the left get some common sense back. Pick your battles, but make sure they are worth fighting. The number of nuns she is bashing would all fit inside a Starbucks store. How embarrassing.
