City of Miami Police Chief Terminated by Commission. By Geniusofdespair

Hit read more for my take on the hearing going on at Miami City Hall.

I have been listening for hours.

Marc Sarnoff made a compelling argument to not dismiss the Chief. He argued against both. So far it appears Carollo is in agreement, he seconded Sarnoff's motion,  but he is circling now. He said there was no insubordination by the Chief. He is still talking. He ended with 2 dictionary definitions of demotion that contained 'change of rank' and none of the 3 officers had rank changed. Suarez agrees with Sarnoff on the overtime charge but not on the demotion. Carollo and Spence-Jones are taking issue with the City Manager's timing for this firing. Sarnoff also didn't like the Manager's timing, i.e. Exposito's contract is up in January.

Now Spence Jones is focused on whether 3 officers suffered demotions. She is saying what the Manager said to the Chief was hold off -- to her that meant don't do anything. The Chief did something, he took away duties. She will side with Suarez. She is siding with officers who she said they were humiliated. Looks like 2 to 2 so far. Spence-Jones is in a loop. Looks like Gort is tie breaker.

1:20pm - Gort agrees with Sarnoff there are too many factions in the police department. Gort said he cannot support Sarnoff's resolution to override the Manager. Looks like Exposito is losing. Carollo is mad at Manager for not giving him timely answers, saying Martinez did the same thing to him (Carollo) that he is accusing Exposito of doing.

Spence-Jones is driving me crazy, she is so shrill with her belabored points. She is trying to exact promises From the Mananger about the hiring of the new Police Chief before they even voted. Could that be illegal? I.e. You have my vote if you agree to this. Sarnoff's motion failed 3 to 2. They took another vote - motion by Suarez - to terminate the Chief same outcome: Sarnoff and Carollo no.

The hearing on Friday showed me that Johnny Martinez is ill-equipped to be the manager. He should be removed for incompetence.

Mitch I certainly agree with you. A city manager is not equip to handle police work. If the chief was promoted then he must know his craft. This is all political and corrupt. Its a sad day in Miami for this to happen and shows how some city managers will do anything to keep their job. This requires a Federal intervention.

God Speed Chief and I sure you may not have won the battle but you will win the war.

Johnny Martinez should have stayed in the background as an Asst. City Manager.

Now that he is in the spotlight, we can all see that he is a mumbling and bumbling buffoon.

Carollo's vote to keep Exposito was a vote against the City Manager. I loved it when Commissioner Suarez asked him to explain his vote before his (which Carollo had passed on with explanation)and all he could say was that he agreed with Sarnoff! The guy can't even complete a thought...and so forth?!? The Chief of Police was an embarrassment. He should of handled his issues with the Mayor in a professional manner.

The only one with a brain was Sarnoff. I was disappointed with Suarez. He is no match for his dad's intellect. He should have been more clever to realize this was all about the Mayor and these charges were trumped up. Carollo is not dumb, he was smarter then 3 of them.

Sarnoff was the star of that hearing. He was a beat ahead of everyone else.

This was all about those illegal video gambling machines. The so-called charges against Exposito were complete nonsense. The mayor and his do-boy manager were seeking to remove the only obstacle to the maquinitas.

And sure, Sarnoff was on the right side of this one. But he is a sleazy dishonest character overall. I always feel like I need a shower after he speaks even when I agree with him.

Sarnoff had a well thought out presentation but whenever he talks I keep my hand on my wallet.

What's up with Sarnoff telling the Police to keep Club Space open 24/7 after he forced Mr Moes to close at 3:00 am?

Regalado is the worst of all these characters, a miserable hypocrit. Johnny(the puppet) deserves to be fired and he will be rather soon. Spencer-J tried to nail two cuban at once (does not surprise me), Gort was as pathetic as usual and Suárez ignored the fact that the real issue was Regalado's vengeance. What a waste of a council!!!

Now Johnny Martinez has a week to reduce the $125 mil budget for the City's 650 firemen to $70 mil. Do 3 day a week firemen need to make $200 per hour plus benefits?

Veldora Arthur makes $250,000 per year while "suspended with pay". Fire employee.

Miami still facing a $62.5 mil deficit. Still 85% of all City revenues go to employees.

Taxpayers get screwed.
