Xavier Suarez, again and again and again? by gimleteye

Xavier Suarez is likable in person, but boy: the political baggage he carries made him a political dinosaur a decade ago. The same intractable forces that spurred the unsustainable growth of Miami Dade County are now pushing the fortunes of the former Miami mayor as though the chapters in his odd history don't matter.

"Details on the 2000 election involvement of Suarez. Ousted Miami Mayor Suarez made a stunning admission ... Suarez said that he “helped fill out absentee ballot forms and enlist Republican absentee voters in Miami-Dade County” for the 2000 presidential election. “Dade County Republicans have a very specific expertise in getting out absentee ballots,” Suarez told Shapiro. “I obviously have specific experience in this myself.” Kendall Coffey, a lead attorney in the Suarez election misconduct case, found Suarez’s statements deeply troubling given his past “systematic and massive absentee ballot fraud."

Julio Robaina (TGO) is running against Suarez for the District 7 county commission seat abandoned by Carlos Gimenez who is running for mayor of Miami-Dade. Robaina, a dyed-in-the-wool Republican who once represented South Miami in the legislature, is reliably conservative. In the legislature, though, he incurred the wrath of developers by standing up for condo owners. For this bit of heresy, he was set upon by the insider, special interest lobby like velociraptors in Jurassic Park, propelling Miguel Diaz de la Portilla-- a dark hat lobbyist who turned against his public interest past thereby winning the admiration of special interests-- into Robaina's former senate seat.

Suarez' supporters evidently believe that history counts for nothing. One thing is for certain: those who don't read history are doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past.

So what's the deal with Robaina's (TGO) near-absent fundraising? Don't tell me he's banking his win on confusion with Hialeah Julio.

Or may be people are not giving to him because they think he is the BAD Julio

I think you will find that the Major developers of condos and lobbyists like Ron Book and Miguel De Grandy are probably being strong-armed by Francis Suarez (son of Xavier and Miami City Commissioner). As a matter of fact, I'd probably speculate that Xavier's fund-raising played a part in dragging out the City of Miami's Billboard issue.

Suarez is a ghost of the past who should disappear FOR GOOD. The problem is that these ghosts have reappeared because, at the present time, is far more profitable to be in office than it was during their time. GO AWAY, SUAREZ, WE DON'T NEED YOU!

That's exactly my point! Is as if they.ve all forgotten actions from the past.
Still, my vote is going for Robaina. We don't need anymore wasteful expending and Gimenez (my first choice) showed no sign of leadership on the debate either.

Talk about baggage, take a look at Julio Robaina's voting record (the good one?). He consistently voted to infringe on a woman's right to choose as well as every pro sports funding issue. http://www.votesmart.org/voting_category.php?can_id=31256

Robaina even voted yes on SB 2692, teaching evolution in Public Schools. other yes votes: HB 7145, Private School Scholarship Program Expansion Act, CS HB 323 Baseball Stadium Funding Eligibility, CS HB 1079 Funding for Professional Sports Franchise Facilities (a bill that authorizes up to $60 million in subsidies for facilities for professional baseball, basketball, football, and hockey franchises).

Mayor/State Rep, Candidate for Dist 7, Robaina lies in the same political bed as Hialeah Mayor, Candidate for Miami-Dade Mayor Robaina. In fact, the State Rep is part of the unreformable State Majority that has consistently empowered the locals to do their harm.

Xavier Suarez has received campaign donations from sleazy lobbyists. The usual suspects. Steve Marin...

X Suarez brought disgrace to Miami, he was removed for voter fraud, his son, Francis, was caught up in the fiasco, and the war chest is replete with donation form the who is who of the sleazy back room dealing lobbyist. This is the same Suarez who want the Arena opened up at 5:00 a.m. so he could shoot some hoops, the same guy who put on his wife’s bathrobe and slippers and went to threaten a constituent, and yes, the same guy who drove the City to financial ruin. Do we need he, or want him - HEL NO!!!!

JUILO ROBAINA - “THE GOOD ONE” - is a breath of fresh air. He does not afraid to take the licks for bucking the special interests. He was a true leader as Mayor of South Miami, and brought pride and tremendous benefits to that City. In Tallahassee, he was the voice of the common folk. Talk about a contrast, yes we need JULIO ROBAINA!!!!
