Two Articles to Check out in the Miami Herald. By Geniusofdespair

Daniel Shoer Roth writes about the Hialeah Ghost Bankers:

I was appalled by a recent story about Hialeah Mayor Julio Robaina, now a candidate for Miami-Dade County mayor, who has given loans of more than $1 million at double-digit interest rates to “old friends and associates.” What a friendship!

Also catch the article Environmentalists fight plan to weaken protection of Biscayne Bay:

The budget cuts are not the only threats to the Biscayne Bay preserve, advocates say. An amendment now before the Senate Committee on Environmental Preservation and Conservation proposes to weaken the statute that created the preserve in the first place.

The Artiles article should merit an honorable mention.

Last anon, I agree. My head is spinning with all the stories today.

As to Shoer Roth, once again, he hits the high marks for his writing. How Hialeah Julio can be a front runner just shows the glaring need for campaign finance reform. It also shows how a sitting Mayor seems to have victimized the willing, in a weird way, then claims to be a victim himself!

I'm so angry with the undoing Growth Management, I can't even think cohesively enough to write a clear comment.

Maybe private enterprise is foreign to many on this blog thats why you have a hard time understanding it and coming to grips with the FACT that lending someone money or investing in a private business is not criminal activity (Well at least not yet).

And for all the Herald (aka Gimenez Mouth press office) writes thats all the FACTS show is that someone lent someone else money at a legal rate of interest and the borrower defrauded the lender and defaulted on the loan and has been making allegations from jail for over a year that have yet to be corroberated by anyone. THOSE ARE THE FACTS.

It s also a fact that Hialeah has one of the lowest tax rates in the state and that Mayor Robaina has high approval ratings (except amongst public employee union members).

Biscayne Bay faces many threats. One of the biggest is the Port of Miami Expansion projects - including the Port Tunnel excavation and dredging to accommodate the post-Panamax ships. What will be the impact of blasting for two years and having the largest cargo ships in the world turning around and docking in Biscayne Bay? Then there's the pending bill that would give Miami Dade County even more years to close the sewage outfall pipe that dumps treated sewage into the Atlantic from Virginia Key. Perhaps we are enjoying the last days of a relatively healthy bay and beaches.

Anon with your FACTS (your emphasis not mine):

Please save your unsubstantiated horse pucks for a more gullible crowd.

The millage in Hialeah for 2010 was 6.54. Unincorporated Miami-Dade was 2.29 - three times lower.

Fully 2/3rds of the cities in this county have lower tax rates than Hialeah.

Hialeah lowered their city millage 0.26 mills back in 2005 and hasn't touched it since. That's a "tax reduction" of 4% over 4 years.

I guess Julio and his minions are going with the "irony platform" perfected by Carl Rove - if you suck on the environment and have a poor record of job creation and taxes, make them your platform planks knowing that voters can't process facts over made up slogans.
