Ethics and Miguel De Grandy ... by gimleteye

Surprised to see Miguel De Grandy on a panel, "When Politics and Law Collide: A Symposium on the Interplay of Ethical Standards in the Public Arena"? On Jan 1, 2010, EOM posted, "The (Florida Supreme Court) justices Thursday accepted De Grandy's plea of guilty with conditions that included the reprimand for violating legal ethics due to a conflict of interest in his private practice. The Coral Gables lawyer at one point represented a bag wrapping company and later a competitor for the same contract with Miami International Airport." De Grandy has represented, too, the GOP in its effort; first to stop Fair Districts and deform its intent, approved by over 60 percent of Florida voters in November 2010. De Grandy was also Natacha Seijas' key operative, lately operating behind the scenes, but in the early 1990's he was a lead attorney for the decade's biggest ethical fiasco in Miami-Dade and Florida: the HABDI deal, through which the unreformable majority of the county commission awarded a 99 year, no-bid lease to directors of the Latin Builders Association reassembled as a private corporation, to turn the former Homestead Air Force Base into a competitor of Miami International Airport. Apparently, MIA wasn't a big enough piggy bank for special interests and lobbyists. Four years ago, I published a piece in Counterpunch on De Grandy. I noted: Vanity Fair published an expose on the 2000 election fiasco that featured De Grandy in a cameo role: "As Vanity Fair notes, De Grandy served as Bush transition team’s chief counsel after the election in which the performance of touch voting screens came under withering attack: “So Jeb Bush now had the luxury of appointing a secretary of state to oversee the challenge of getting Florida’s new touch-screens to work as promised. The governor formed a transition team, which included Miguel De Grandy as chief counsel. De Grandy, a Republican lawyer who had done all he could to block Miami-Dade’s recount in 2000, had been recommended by Sandra Mortham to be hired as E.S.&S.’s lawyer-lobbyist in his county. Now this same E.S.&S. lobbyist was chief counsel of the governor’s transition team. The next secretary of state and her director of elections would oversee the certification process for all upgrades to E.S.&S. machines. De Grandy sees nothing untoward about the arrangement because, he says, he did not advise the governor personally on whom to choose for secretary of state.” Ethics, can't wait to hear this one.

I told the Ethics Commission, in an email, that he was the wrong choice for an ethics conference and I got a very strange reply.

Maybe they think it is better to have the camel in the tent not outside.

I've known Miguel for almost 20 years. He's an an incredibly smart advocate for his client's interest and he's doing a lawyer's job: representing his client. Once he left the Legislature, he was free to focus on developing his law practice. All you've done is point out how successful he's been.

Gimlete, you made the Herald again! Congrat's, as to MAD I guess you have a point as long as you don't include Ethics, which is what this is about!

And, they're giving CLE credits too!

Look around Miami-Dade County. If you consider what you see a "success" then you have too much money and you can buy enough lawyers time to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

At least he seems outnumbered by some decent people. Maybe they can make him look like the crook he is.

I think it's hilarious to see De Grandy on that panel because not only is he one of the most unehical lawyers walking the face of the earth, but he doesn't believe the concept of "law and politics colliding," he believes they are meant to lovingly embrace -- and the more indecent, the more delightful it will be! LOL Anywhere there is something dishonest going on, he'll be hanging around. A disgrace to decent Cubans -- not that he gives a damn!

"One of the most unethical?" Worse than Hank Adorno?

I wonder if they'll have Mayor Julio Robaina as the Keynote Speaker?
