Watch out for a new PAC. By Geniusofdespair

One Miami is a new Political Action Committee. It sounds so friendly and inclusive. It is actually a SEIU Pac funded and registered out of New York. It has $6,975. I wonder what they are going to lobby for, more bad candidates? If they were smart they would be lobbying for their continued existence. We progressive citizens -- once their friends -- are turning off to unions in droves because of their steadfast support of bad candidates: Like Natacha Seijas.

The Unions supported Natacha because she supported them. You dance with the one that 'brung ya.

And you lose the 10 others holding a dance card.

Back again G.o.D. to suggest circumspection in your criticism of the unions, particularly SEIU. SEIU is, nationally, the most progressive union, and has succeeded in nudging AFL-CIO to the left on many issues. Locally, SEIU has been heroic in organizing some of our most underpaid and vulnerable workers. I don't know why SEIU local supported Seijas; why not ask them. The local's first responsibility is to protect its members, many of whom, as I said, are relatively low-wage. If (and I don't claim to know this), Seijas offered critical protection for the membership, and if I was a member, I'd vote for her too.

I understand, and share, your contempt for Seijas. But before demonizing an organization for differing from you on a single issue, see what it shares with you generally.

The single issue is keeping a multitude of bad candidates in office. It is bad enough to fight the lobbyists and developers, but fighting the unions too is not a single issue. It is an issue that impacts us at every turn because we have lousy people making our laws that throw a few crumbs to labor.

From Herald Naked Politics (WE NEED CHARTER REFORM NOW, NOT LATER):

Officials ramp up push for Miami-Dade reforms
Miami-Dade commissioners are scheduled to set a special election Thursday for voters to choose replacements for recalled Mayor Carlos Alvarez and Commissioner Natacha Seijas. They're also set to discuss reforms to the county charter -- but now there's talk that the board will not make a decision on putting charter amendments on the same ballot as the special election.

That prompted at least one mayoral hopeful, Commissioner Carlos Gimenez, to release a statement pushing for the reforms. He and the other leading candidates, Hialeah Mayor Julio Robaina and former state Rep. Marcelo Llorente, have supported an eight-point reform plan proposed by billionaire Norman Braman, who spearheaded the recall.

And from Tallahassee, state Rep. Luis Garcia, a Miami Beach Democrat, sent commissioners a letter urging for the changes to go on the ballot.

"It would only be right and just to allow voters to make reforms in their local government now," Garcia wrote. "There is an incredible hunger among the electorate to adopt sweeping reforms to the way County Hall is operated. I truly believe that Miami-Dade residents do not want to wait any longer to implement reforms to their local government."

UPDATE: Llorente has also put out a statement pressuring commissioners to move quickly on charter changes.

The SEIU, Service Employees International Union, represents service workers. Seijas passed the Living Wage Law that provides wage protection for service workers on county contracts. She passed the Anti-Wage Theft Law for workers to recover wages owed to them by unscrupulous employers. The service workers in restaurants are the most exploited group when it comes to wage theft. Seijas passed laws that amount to much more than "a few crumbs" - these laws make a difference in the lives of working people. Now that you tossed Seijas, who should we support?

I tossed Seijas out? Since when do I vote in Hialeah or Miami Lakes? And I didn't vote in the election anyway.

The hypocrisy is too much! The balls on Rebecca Sosa. Look at what Sosa is sponsoring tomorrow. She proposes 8 year term limits, but to take affect after 2012. She’s already been there 10 years. Yes ten years! So she supports term limits of eight years that will allow her to serve almost 20 years. Really! If this is not talking out of both sides of the mouth, I don’t know what is. please read last section of the resolution below.

How sad... Sosa is going the VNS route. I guess she wants to be there
For 20 years. Real reform. I hope someone is keeping tabs on this.

I have to laugh at the poster who commented about the living wage law on County Contract - those contracts are all insiders. OMG, the 6 degrees of separation between cost overruns on projects by these "contract" when the change orders pile up. Departments being run or employing family members of the commissioners, dealing with the same contracts. Or, the direct relations to commissioners and the company's receiving those contracts.

It just boggles the mind how the VNS supporters portray her as some type of saint when she, burgess, alvarez and the majority of the BCC has caused what I call a financial disaster upon this County, with the tab being picked up by the taxpayers and even County Employees who still live in the County! Not even County employees want to live in the County they turned in to a disaster zone so they moved to Broward, after the BCC approved it.

As to Sosa, I would expect nothing less from her. And, Bruno, well I think he's still a puppet of VNS, she's just further behind the scenes.

SEIU - I hold you in the same regard as I do the current Florida Legislature, which is as low as you can go in my book.
