Postscript: 5pm. They came up with one insulting to citizens charter change -- a 12 year term limit and a salary increase. What a bunch of turkeys. They already did the $90,000 in 2008 tied to no ouside employment and we rejected it. Hey Commissioners don't insult us: 8 years is already too much of you folks. Joe Martinez - we are fed up.
-----------
I will do on the spot reporting from the County Commission meeting. It will be interesting to see them weasel out of Charter Change. They are proposing a straw vote? What do they take us for a pack of fools.
10:15-- just getting started, everyone is fashionably late. They are talking about fire at airport now. Sixty flights were cancelled -- 1/3 of flights. Plenty will be late. Mechanical failure they say. Also they have a bomb scare (unattened bag and had to evacuate part of the terminal). Souto is now talking... I will have plenty of time to write as he blathers on. Seijas' former chief of staff Terry Murphy is in the audience. Souto is talking about Libya and Cuba now. Martinez has asked him to get to the point--which appears to be he wants more security at airport.
10:35 Jordan wants to change $75,000 to State formula. Resolution 110629.
Martinez asked but no one wanted to appoint a mayor/commissioner. Talking about election on May 3rd. Now they probably all will pontificate (lots of cameras in the room). Qualifying period is point of contention. Qualifying period immediate?? That way all candidates would have to resign to run. Hard on Sosa, Gimenez and Robaina. Gimenez wants item 1 to be last item (110637) on agenda. He wants true charter reform on the ballot, then set date. Sosa does not want to reduce the number of commissioners in the charter. Wants to do changes right. Grandstanding now for 'little people'. Wants election buGt not charter questions on it. Now - they are all grandstanding on how much the did reform. Blah, blah. He wants charter changes on general election ballot, not on this special election ballot.
10:59 - Now a surprised Martinez asked if all these resolutions could go on a straw ballot. The attorney said yes. Martinez acted surprised. Gimme a break. We all knew that little Joe. Your candor was so fake it was laughable. Now Heyman is complaining about charter change being rushed. Wants straw vote. We are going to get F--ked. Remembered we already had a long drawn out Charter Review Committee and these assholes voted them down. Now all of a sudden they have to rethink them. Monestime can't support quick charter change vote. Martinez suggested (no surprise) to Monestime, maybe you can support a straw vote. You know where this is going folks.
11:12 - Why is Raul Martinez here? Moss is talking against downsizing the county commission -- will hurt blacks and whites. Pepe le pew Diaz complaining how he wants to hear from people. Change done with haste is no good. I must listen to the people. Again doesn't want charter change on the ballot because there hasn't been a public hearing and he needs to hear from the people. What bullshit. If I hear the word haste - rush etc. I am going to scream. This is so f--ked. I am ready to leave. Martinez wants a straw ballot looking for vote on it I presume. Souto will be speaking again. I won't be able to sit through him.
11:32 - it is going to be a straw ballot with THEIR charter changes. By the time the vote comes, people will be on to other things. We won't get any petition reforms. I am going - adios. So much for democracy.

I'm going to be there too, as an observer. What time to they begin, 10?
The Bruno resolution, I posted below, is very interesting and I think should be supported. There are too many career politicians in this County and in the municipality's.
And, I can see Bell having heart failure over this because technically, with her Homestead Council & 2 yr Mayor stint, she'd be out quicker than we could recall her!

RESOLUTION CALLING A COUNTYWIDE SPECIAL ELECTION IN MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, TO BE HELD ON TUESDAY, [ ], 2011, FOR THE PURPOSE OF SUBMITTING TO THE ELECTORS OF MIAMI DADE COUNTY THE QUESTION OF WHETHER TO AMEND THE HOME RULE CHARTER TO PROVIDE, COMMENCING WITH THE COUNTY MAYOR AND COMMISSION ELECTIONS SCHEDULED FOR 2012, THAT NO PERSON WHO HAS SERVED EIGHT (8) YEARS AS AN ELECTED MUNICIPAL OR COUNTY OFFICER IN MIAMI-DADE COUNTY SHALL BE ELIGIBLE TO QUALIFY AS A CANDIDATE FOR, NOR MAY BE ELECTED AS, MAYOR OR COUNTY COMMISSIONER
I'm watching the meeting and once again, even at 10:10 AM, the majority of the commissioners can't be bothered to be on time (they're probably very busy with lobbyists in their offices). We, the voters and taxpayers, just don't count.
I think I see Martinez, Gimenez and a few others I can't make out.
How arrogant they are.
I think that goes a little too far; for example, Flinn could then only serve one four year term if ever elected to the Commission. Charter review is not something that should be reactionary or decided in one meeting of the BCC.
This is our local consitution peol;e, not be be nit picked but needs comprehensive review without the spector of VNS
If Barreiro's proposition goes through, former Mayor Flinn would automatically be disqualified from ever running at the County level because he was elected to 2 four year terms as Mayor of a municipality.
This item is totally ridiculous.
Then again, look who's proposing it.
THIS JUST IN:
Former Miami-Dade County Mayoral Candidate Helen B. Williams is at the Special BCC meeting regarding charter reform and filling the vacancies created by the recall vote.
She is in the audience and she keeps flailing her hands to get attention from the BCC. She is seeking to be appointed to the Mayoralty.
We love her zany antics. But we can't take her seriously.
That is all.

BCC equals board of county cowards! They're not going to let the voters actually vote on charter change, they're just blowing smoke and grandstanding. No matter how you slice it, they just cannot let the will of the people be. They're going to go on and on and on, and in the end, they're going to screw us!
Diaz - we're not rushing, we're tired of waiting for action. These reforms have been re hashed forever.
Now that we know Charter Change isn't going to happen (any BCC veteran watcher knows this), another interesting thing I thought:
If Gimenez chooses not to resign to run, I actually think Flinn would be the best person for the Mayor of the County position. I like Gimenez and support him for Mayor, it's just one of those "what if" ideas.
Flinn did a great job as Mayor of Palmetto Bay (I did support him for his Dist. 8 campaign). I see him as a greater administrator than legislator. His only down side is that he's not hispanic, but he'd make a great County Mayor to maybe be a placeholder until 2012. Gimenez would make a great Mayor too so therein lies the quandry.
I give up watching this whole thing. I have a migrane listening to them say the same thing over and over again.
Recall them all and let's move on! As Edmunson said, that will term limit them and hopefully her. Us self appointed "leaders"!
This County Commission is the biggest bunch of self serving idiots. They are just grandstanding and shuffling around like they do at each meeting.
We need the legislature to circumvent the commission so we can get charter amendments on the ballots w/o the BCC involved. They plainly want to save their hides. It is clear to me that the County government should be regionalized, the unincorporated area merged into neighboring municipalities and regional authorities handling airport, seaport, fire rescue, etc. If Commissioners argue that their constituents only read the miami time, didn't know about the special meeting, and don't know what the hell goes on outside their world, then let them be governed by another municipality.
As if the Redlands have any interest in being part of Homestead; although it would enhance the political gene pool... right and Cutler Bay is going to take Leisure City, Goulds and Naranja? Just rename most of South Dades newest mega city "Super Slum"
It all worked according to my plan. You can't recall the Commissioners elected in 2010 until November. By then, you fickle little pinheads will be distracted by "American Idol" or "Dancing with the Stars". The County, with only a few new players, will go on as before.
Norman, thanks for the distraction. It was amusing. But in the end, it meant nothing.
Redland & Redland's Edge will not incorporate in to Homestead - ask Curt Ivy about the last time they tried to annex the area. I'm sure they'd like to either incorporate separately or into one entity "Redland".
Does anyone have the score card as to what passed and what didn't? They're still going on about signatures on petitions.
Once again the have stack the deck of charter reform in such way that they will be defeated. What will it take to have real reform?
Another Recall...just keep recalling till they finally get it.
Too bad you didn't stick around. They decided against the straw vote as an empty gesture.
A small number of of charter items are destined for an election. Although not actually set yet, it will happen along with the Mayor and District 13 race on May 24th. A follow up meeting will be held on April 11 or 12 to set the Mayor's race for the same date. Technicalities with the charter and trying to put everything on the same ballot.
i LOVE how if you dont agree with a commissioner the first thing you can think of is a recall. RECALL=$$$ to have another ELECTION in a few months that = $$$$$
instead of doing a recall to spend MORE money, put all the efforts into doing a campaign against the incumbent and finding a candidate that will do the job.
the recll election shows it is NOT impossible to beat an incumbent. so instead of throwing all this money away, lets wait for the next election and put our efforts there.
if not, lets keep recalling, spending money and doing whatever Mr. Braman wants....
if you havent noticed, it all started with Braman wanting to recall mayor alvarez, now Braman wants charter reform, then he makes all the mayoral candidates sign a "covenant".... ummm whos pulling the strings now? think about it... he MUST have a hidden agenda...
-my 2 cents
