Citizens for a Better South Florida: If you have among your board members an Enterprise Rent-A-Car staffer and a Florida Power and Light executive it is bad enough. But to have one of Holland & Knight's partners and most un-environmental attorneys - Juan Mayol ...you are not an environmental group any longer. You were pushing the envelope with engineers, Pres. Arsenio Milian, but we all still supported you. This guy can be an attorney and do what he wants, but when he enters the environmental realm it is a slap in the face. He doesn't walk the walk or do the talk. He does the TOTAL opposite on both ends.
On the Holland and Knight website it says:
"He represents builders and developers in all aspects of land use law through the entire development process, from zoning approvals to subdivision and building permit issues. In addition, Mr. Mayol handles environmental matters as they relate to the development process."
Juan Mayol is a totally ridiculous choice for a group focused on environmental education. Why are you giving him a green-washing? So he can raise funds for you and you in return can give him some green cover? He fights environmental regulations and finds environmental loopholes for his clients. He is always fighting to move the Urban Development Boundary at County Hall (Krome Gold, Lennar, Lowe's Big Box to name a few). Some education you will be giving our kids over there, teaching them that money trumps the environment. You might as well put Rick Scott or Stuart Miller on your Board, you couldn't get much worse than Juan Mayol.

I noticed another rock mining application, in addition to Krome Gold.
This PAC is about as environmentally friendly as VNS is!
And, to the readers who don't live "South of the Mason Dixon line" - Carlos Gimenez approved Krome Gold. Juan Zapata attended the Community Council Hearing on this and seemed very buddy, buddy with Armando Guerra.
I mention the above, because Gimenez (who I happen to like otherwise) made a very bad decision here, and Zapata may be eyeing Martinez' seat if he filed to run for Mayor.
Mayol is not as bad as Bercow, but he's up there running a close second, in my opinion. If there's an application to move the UDB, Rock Mine at the edge of the Everglades, Mayol is the go to guy.
If Citizens for a Better South Florida really wanted a better South Florida they would get Juan Mayol to resign. That could help Florida more than anything else they can do.

and advised that charter schools often get contracts approved by the School Board. She noted
the contract approved by the School Board for the subject school permitted only grades K-8, not
Pre-K and that it was approved subject to the zoning approval and receipt of a certificate of
occupancy. Ms. Good noted she contacted Schools of Choice who confirmed that 706 students
were enrolled at this school as of August 25, 2006."

What does your comment have to do with Juan Mayol or Citizens?
First, Arsenio Milian created Citizens for a Better South Florida. Second, he has always fought our fights. Not sure why this post is worded this way or why such comments regarding Mr. Milian. As for Juan Mayol, there is no crime of being a land-use lawyer as long as he is fair and lets the community participate in controversial projects and finds the best solution.
Might not be a crime to be a land use lawyer but Juan Mayol doesn't belong on any environmental group's board of directors. Let him join the Chamber of Commerce. That is where he belongs.
Yes, he goes out in the community and gives the people half the story in getting them to sign petitions favoring his developments. He did it to me.
I was always told that this was the HISPANIC environmental group. I suppose that they do things differently.

Mr. Juan Mayol, Holland & Knight, 701 Brickell Avenue, attorney representing the applicant, appeared before the Board in support of the foregoing application. He noted the following
solutions were proffered by the applicant to address the traffic problems......
Miami, Florida, appeared before the Board and noted the subject school was approved for grades K-5 but operating through the 7th grade level, and that its current enrollment exceeded the 600 student limit......
Miami, Florida, appeared before the Board and noted a Pre-K existed at this school......
Mr. Mayol reappeared before the Board in rebuttal.
Discussion ensued regarding whether this charter school was in violation of the contract approved by the School Board by enrolling more students than permitted, and by operating through the 7th grade level and operating a Pre-K......
Mr. Mayol explained that his client was asking forgiveness to permit the school to serve the 74
students currently enrolled in the 7th grade through the remainder of this school year. He asked
the Board to approve grades K-8 with the number of students limited to 700. He stated as a
condition of the approval, the applicant was willing to accommodate at least 100 students with
public transportation to and from the school to alleviate traffic concerns in the area.
Commissioner Sorenson noted her acceptance of the request to approve grades K-8 subject to an
enrollment limit of 600 students, and allow the 706 students currently enrolled to finish out this
school year. She stated, however, that she wanted to ensure enforcement was done by Team
Metro should a Pre-K exist at this school.........
