Some of the final campaign reports aren't in yet, however, I thought I would note a disturbing trend. It takes a fortune to run for the school board. Ronda Vangates raised $163,963; Raquel Regalado raised $167,886, Carlos Curbelo raised $265,140 and Perla Tabares Hantman collected a whopping $335,909 to run (she does have $170,000 loans to herself but it is still money spent). Marta Perez, without opposition, raised $123,258. In all, as of today's reports on line, $1,522,564 was collected for 5 school board races.
What do the people contributing get? You can bet that the big donors aren't after a good education for the kids. The Ron Book family spent about $8,500 on all the races. He gave to all the winning candidates. Ron Book hedged his bets in the Vangates/Bendross-Mindigall race, giving to both candidates ($1,500 to Vangates and $3,500 to the winner Bendross-Mindigall).
And, why would Perla spend $162,452 of her own money (she reimbursed herself for $7,548) to be on the school board? It just doesn't make any sense. With such an obscene amount of money involved, I think someone should be watching the school board a bit closer but it isn't going to be me.

In Broward county construction contracts were influenced by School Board members. Got to be the link.
