Longtime Aide/Chief of Staff to Mayor Tomas Regalado will be appointed this week as the next City of Miami Manager, replacing outgoing Carlos A. Migoya.
I don't know whether or not he is suited to be a City Manager but I have always liked Tony Crapp, he is respectful of citizens and when I went to see him, he seems genuinely interested in my issues and he was eager to be helpful. I wish him luck!

Tony Crapp, Jr. might be a nice guy but seriously? He has no private sector experience and he has no serious public sector experience. For years he worked in a small office with 2-3 part-time employees. He is a novice.
What makes Mayor Regalado think Crapp is qualified to manage 4,000 employees and a $700 Million budget?
Isn't this like promoting a pizza delivery guy to run Goldman Sachs?
He ran OCED at the county and another development agency before he was a county manager

It is clear that Regalado wants a yes man, not someone that actually cares about the City.
In the end it probably only buys the City a bit more time before the lies and deceptions of the nonexistant funds are finally exposed.
Tony Crapp, Sr. has his own problems.
Tony Crapp, Jr. is an inexperienced lightweight unprepared for managing 4,000 employees. Will Tony Crapp, Jr. have the courage to fire 750 overpaid employees who hate their jobs but love their pay and benefits? Who Crapp fire the disgraced CFO Larry Spring? Will Crapp fire the criminals stealing from the taxpayers?

Tony may be great with people, but this is the city of Miami we are talking about.

When you hire an African American as your city manager, you better be sure you made a wise choice because the inevitable separation process is almost always messy. The NAACP does not believe there is any reason to fire a black city manager even if there is corruption and/or gross mismanagement (e.g., the experience of North Miami Beach).
City still facing bankruptcy due to overpaid employees and overly generous benefits. What happens when new City Manager Tony Crapp refuses to fire useless black employees? What happens when he refuses to cut expenses?
I find it incredible that Regalado has the guts to criticize Money Diaz. Has anyone ever seen more cronyism in the City of Miami than now? It's becoming the "parade of the yes men".
Interesting how many comments suggest that he won't have the spine to fire black people since he's black or that he's going to F up and the Mayor won't fire him because of the same. When did this site draw out that kind of commentary?
He seems earnest, but I agree with others about his management chops - he doesn't really have any. He does seem to have a good sense of how to fix problems legislatively.
If the outgoing Manager thinks he's capable, maybe you all should chill and see how this plays out. He may turn out like Al Ruder and bow out after a couple months, or maybe he'll surprise everyone.

Isn't this a strong mayor city? If so Regalado is in charge and Mr. Crapp will do his bidding. He is a perfect choice - loyal to the mayor and able to get things done. Assuming he won't fire incompetent African Americans is racist - come on, he is a professional.
Tony Crapp has been there long enough to know where the city's dysfunction is. Bringing in an outsider who has a long learning curve and worse-- blindly taking council from underlings is not such a hot idea.
Give him a chance, the Mayor will be setting policy, Tony is able to carry out any policy the Mayor can come up with. And, I don't think he would shrink away from firing a person of color -- that is a racist assumption.

As a City of South Miami resident, I and my fellow taxpayers care about effective local government management and good governance. It should be a concept that's important to a local government and its citizens no matter what its size.

A city as large, as complex, and problematic as Miami should have engaged a headhunter to conduct a national search for the most experienced, professional city manager with impeccable credentials.
A career professional knows the problems and knows how to solve them immediately without baggage and bias. Get the best - the cost is the same.
A political aide to the Miami Mayor is not a trained, professional city manager. Miami has made another mistake and has settled for second best and what is comfortable. Business as usual, again.
It really is not so much about Tony Crapp, Jr. and his lack of management experience. I honestly believe it's about a radio talk host, who has no management experience, hence he doesn't have the wherewithal to hire anyone he doesn't personally know (aka cronyism)!

Will Crapp be able to fire criminals who work for the City? Some of the criminals might even be his friends? Or will Crapp let the crimes continue with the taxpayers footing the bill?
