Surfside Gets a New Manager. By Geniusofdespair

Roger Carlton was appointed Town Manager of Surfside. Carlton has a long career in government, having been either in government or working with companies that support government in South Florida since 1978. He has twice been Miami Dade County Assistant County Manager and has served as City Manager of Miami Beach and South Miami. I observed Carlton for a couple of years when he was the chair of the Watershed Committee, a thankless job - he had to deal with some loons and he did a good job.

I want the County scoop, maybe I will corner Roger one of these days for lunch and try to drag out some dirt. Anyway, I like Surfside. It is so much more hospitable than one of its ugly neighbors, Sunny Isles Beach, a town known for no parking and its continuous wall of massive, high-rise condos blocking people from the beach. Surfside has height restrictions so it has some charm and it does have a small pedestrian friendly downtown.

There is nothing charming in Sunny Isles. It is a mess.

I hope Surfside appreciates Roger -- unlike those ingrates in South Miami. He is both talented and informed. I wish him well.

Roger Carlton is a retread that will take Surfside into a tailspin. He should go away into the sunset.

There is a riptide churning Surfside, a microcosm of bigger problems unraveling. We aught to replace the town attorney also (formerly from shady isles). The next commish meet should be a raucous, irate petitioners locking horns with mayor. Genuis, thanks for keeping an eye on our mayberry. Visit any time, red or white?

The riptide and microcosm Old Swampers is refering to is the apathy generated by folks like himself who do the complaining but never attend meetings and get involved. No wonder the goons take over. I do wish the town would get rid of that airhead attorney however.
