Don't miss this Britto/Ron Book Bashing Article. By Geniusofdespair

Miami New Times had this hilarious article on Britto's painted parking meters that Lobbyist Ron Book commissioned so the public could feed money in them for the homeless. Like that is going to ever happen. Here is a snippet from the Gus Garcia-Roberts article, featuring two of my favorites to razz, Britto and Book. Also in the article the homeless are interviewed for their take on the meters, lets just say they aren't loving Ron Book right now:

Pop artist Romero Britto's work has infected Miami like a great open sore pulsing red, yellow, and blue. When future archeologists unearth our city, they'll think we worshiped squinting kitty-cats and butterflies--and that our artistic ability fell one neanderthal short of a cave painting.

Now Britto has teamed up with the luminary responsible for Miami's famous Julia Tuttle sex offender colony, lobbyist and Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust chairman Ron Book, for his least tasteful project yet. Parking meters, painted a dog-vomit yellow...

Who approved it in the first place? I really, really hope they get something out of this, otherwise it's just a waste of tax payer's hard earned money...

The Homeless trust presented this project at the league of cities and I was so impressed we invited them to present to our city. We are sponsoring a meter in out municipality, in front of the community center. It will provide parents an opportunity to talk to their kids about the homeless, and the importance of donating to worthwhile programs, rather than giving money to panhandlers who will use it for drugs or liquor. The Homeless trust collects the money from these special meters around town and it goes to support the shelters. Beside, some of us like Britto art!

Well, those meters surely are not the cute flamingos we had around town years ago.

I hate yellow.

The ubiquity of Britto's "work" makes me crazy, but you've got to admit that it is the perfect embodiment of Miami - all flash and no substance. The idea of the meters is a good one, in my opinion. Why not give money to the Homeless Trust and be certain that it will go towards something worthwhile, rather than supporting the addictions of the guys holding the cardboard signs at what seems like every major intersection in the County?
