Oil Drilling: Only in Miami Could It Get This Stupid. By Geniusofdespair

This was the resolution at the County Commission May 18th:

RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE CONTINUATION OF THE FEDERAL MORATORIUM ON OFFSHORE OIL AND GAS DRILLING TO PROTECT FLORIDA’S COAST AND TOURISM-RELATED INDUSTRY; URGING CONGRESS NOT TO ALLOW FOR SUCH OFFSHORE DRILLING; OPPOSING ANY EFFORT BY THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE TO ALLOW FOR OFFSHORE DRILLING NEAR THE FLORIDA COAST

And yes there were actually two County Commissioners, Bruno Barreiro and Joe Martinez, who voted against it. Get a load of Dim Bruno's reasoning and remember he is the Miami Beach Commissioner with plenty of vulnerable coastline in his district:

Yo. What Bruno means is that the best hole to drill is the one closest to home. How does a guy like this get elected and re-elected?

He's broken a personal best of stupidity via public access! How does he keep getting elected. It's like the lights are on but no one is home!

Putting the actual resolution aside that he was to be voting on, his thinking is just absoluting logic defying!

I think he's mentally challenged with a good campaign manager. Poor Miami Beach - this is the Commissioner protecting our coast line - NOT!

Yep, blame it on Obama Bruno.

The ONLY way I would support drilling the FL reserves is if wells are drilled IN metro miami as well as offshore too.

we must be at home with the idea, cozy with it. i grew up around pump jacks, why cant we have a few on key biscayne or in cocoplum? howabout a tank battery on star island and a pump station next to the ICON and Nikki Beach?

These are the real decisions we must make. We cant just allow e&p out of eyeshot. we need to be THAT comfortable with e&p (exploration and production).

everyone should be aware of what a separator, preventer, mud, and benzene are and what they mean to achievement of our current lifestyle. Why delude ourselves anymore?

derricks will still be dwarfed by the empty high rises, right?

Doesn't he understand that they already depleted all the oil closer to shore in Louisiana and that is why they were so far out?

So Carlos Gimenez voted for it? Quite the flip-flop from 2008, when he "spoke in support of the United States of America (USA) becoming energy independent through all forms of energy and by using the existing resources in the Gulf of Mexico. Commissioner Gimenez clarified the only oil leaks from hurricanes Katrina and Rita were from older pipes, and the newer technology was much improved."

He also "emphasized that the offshore drilling technology had improved to the point that offshore drilling was not a major environmental risk. He noted offshore drilling could help the USA become independent of the Middle East and Venezuela for fuel. He suggested that offshore drilling could improve the USA’s global trade, as well as impact national security."

Don't take my word for it; I'm just quoting the official meeting minutes: http://www.miamidade.gov/govaction/matter.asp?matter=082050&file=true&yearFolder=Y2008.

Ah, yes..the old "Its the sierra club's fault for moving the drilling far off the shore..straight from Rush". The only thing Bruno is good for is to make Souto look less stupid...

WE are to blame for allowing others to elect these idiots. Everyone who stays home on election day in August every two years is to blame for the bad government we have. Please go vote in August 24 and elect good people.
