Next up: "Top Gun" ... US military will take over the Gulf Oil Spill? by gimleteye

BP tried "Top Hat". Now the company is trying-- Wednesday we hear-- "Top Kill"; to inject heavy drilling mud and stop the gulf oil spill. If that doesn't work, I bet the US military is coming in. It's a huge political risk for Obama if the military does come in and "Top Gun" also doesn't work. BTW, there is no federal agency with even a chance of grasping the technologies involved in deep water oil exploration. Chatter on the internet is that caving in the well with explosives has worked before, although never tried (again, a first) at these depths. I'm not feeling very good today about the Gulf of Mexico being used as a science experiment. On the other hand, it is only the most visible example of how voters allowed corporations to have their way with life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

You're right, too much theory and no practical action. For years we've been hearing how this scenario would "never" happen - too many fail-safe mechanisms were in place - and those of us who strongly opposed oil drilling in the Gulf were "tree-huggers" (there are no trees to hug in the ocean, right?!) who just wanted to drive oil companies out of business with "over-regulation". Weeeell, we were right, and now they're scrambling to test all the solutions they told us were true and tried and our oceans are toxic with oil and dispersants. When will we learn?! When will we get off our behinds and go vote in mass against candidates who raise millions of dollars and stuff our mailboxes with mailers, then go to Washington, Tallahassee or even county government and work against the people?

I suspect BP has not used the "Top Kill" before because of financial considerations. Sealing the well with heavy drilling mud and concrete means they will have to spend millions to recover the well in the future and they're just not willing to spend all that money. More of the same. Cutting corners for profit and safety, the environment and people's health go to hell.

We need to be much more selective in who we support and elect and start voting in larger numbers if we want good government.

In response to : "BTW, there is no federal agency with even a chance of grasping the technologies involved in deep water oil exploration."

I have wondered why NASA does not step in. They do training in inner space all the time. I have been saying this for weeks.
