Gulf Oil Spill: "managing expectations" ... by gimleteye

It took nearly a month for the US government to compel BP to broadcast a live feed of its catastrophic oil leak 5,000 feet under the surface of the Gulf of Mexico. The corporation had good reason to keep from public view the true scope of the disaster and understands, perfectly, how managing expectations meant concealing the visual images of the broken well head. Everything that BP does, down there, should be available for public inspection: including today's "Top Kill". The corporation has said that it plans to cut the video feed while the experiment, the first of its kind so deep underwater, is attempted. In a continued effort to manage expectations, BP is giving the effort a 60 percent chance of success. Given that its corporate irresponsibility has a 100 percent chance of severely damaging the Gulf of Mexico and economies that depend on its natural resources, BP should be compelled to do its work in full view of the public. There is no reason to close the curtains on any aspect of its operation now. It is all part of the accountability so badly missing from this catastrophe.

From the posted notation on the BP live feed, it appears this live feed will continue: "Please be aware, this is a live stream and may freeze or be unavailable from time to time. Throughout the extended top kill procedure – which may take up to two days to complete - very significant changes in the appearance of the flows at the seabed may be expected. These will not provide a reliable indicator of the overall progress, or success or failure, of the top kill operation as a whole. BP will report on the progress of the operation as appropriate and on its outcome when complete."

I read where an option that BP does not want to use would involve "bombing" the leak to plug it. Anyone know anything about this? I am angry Obama has not put his face forward on this - special evening news press conference to address this National emergency. He's sinking deeper than this friggin hole. It's beginning to feel like the "not ready for primetime" players are running the government.

It's been documented in several scientific journals that Obama sent a team of nuclear physicists to consult with BP about the use of a potential "nuclear option" but I haven't heard anything more on this.
