April 28th - They Want to Move the UDB. By Geniusofdespair

There is no better show than watching the County Commission dancing with a UDB Application lobbyist. The Commissioners do this every two years when someone wants to move the urban development boundary. The Commissioners huff and they puff until the lobbyist makes some meaningless promise like "We will put a cistern on the roof," "We will create jobs" or "We will build a school" and then the Commissioners sigh in relief and vote for the UDB change. Each will say: "Jobs/cistern/school (doesn't matter which), well in that case it is an overriding need which trumps everything else on the planet." You will hear this cover gibberish (made up by the lobbyist, of course) from each of the unreformable majority: Souto, Martinez, Diaz, Rolle, Edmonson, Jordan, and vile Natacha Seijas. Rebeca Sosa is the Sandra Day O'Connor of the Commission, she can go either way.

Nothing to do on April 28th? Come downtown to the County Commission chambers at 9:30 a.m. Good laughs...If you want to call someone, try Rebeca Sosa, (305) 375-5696 ask for her Chief of Staff, Roly. Tell Rebeca to vote against the line move. It will be interesting to see if any of the candidates for Katy's seat show up for this UDB vote - They all should.

Can someone in a higher pay grade than myself explain this ordinance regarding the CDMP, including this application, showing up on the 4/28BCC agenda:

Boy not even Joe "Let's Rationalize the UDB Line" Martinez could be for this. Could he?

These UDB move efforts, with no demand for new real estate in the hinterlands, are like a dog owner who keeps beating his dog just to show who is boss.

Don't understand your question reader above? This is exactly why we need amendment 4 by the way.

Every two years the Commission hears changes to the CDMP the comprehensive development master plan. These are them - there are 6. Many of them are annoying but the one I wrote about is the worst one: NO. 4 on their list.

This is exactly what Amendment 4 would give YOU a vote on -- these changes. They are not all UDB changes.

Joe will say: We need jobs in that area. This land will stimulate the economy.

They're just looking for 1 little precedent setting approval. It will then open the floodgates and they'll have to say " well, we approved this oone, we have to approve all the rest" -- come on, we all know the builders and developers in South Florida ain't going to be happy until they've paved their way from coast to coast. Kendall hell as far as the eye can see....
What really makes me angry is that a regular working joe like myself can never get to these meetings in person and make myself heard.

And FPL is trying to 4 lane a road that will cut right through an Everglades restoration project! How can a utility be given the right to do this, after we have all spent millions in tax dollars to fix the Everglades?

Is this really happening? We need new leadership at the County Commission!
I can not believe that anyone wanting to run for Mayor could possibly vote to move the Urban Development Boundary.

Yeah, Happy Earthday Miami! We are really progressive around here. We do not eaven have leadership that can connect the dots that add up to improving our economy.

When the item comes up, it will be interesting to watch what Comm. Gimenez says and how he votes. Gimenez' son is Miguel Diaz de la Portilla's associate. Little Jr. even brags about his connections in his lawfirm's bio.

Miguel Diaz de la Portilla will be advocating for the UDB move on Wednesday. He gave $500 to Gene Flinn - Interesting. So much for the 'lady bugs' he's releasing today as part of Earth Day.

I voted against Ferro & the FPL road expansion on SW 359th when they were before the Planning Advisory Board. My comments are public record as to why and too long to write on this blog.

And, if anyone wants to know where I stand on the UDB (and I do actually know where it is and have driven it), I do not support moving it and was in fact an originating member of Hold the Line.

At the time Hold the Line formed, there was so much development pressure due to the boom and cheap Ag land, now the pressure is on the UDB to bank future uses when the economy recovers which will spur more sprawl than we have now, at a future date.

Sincerely,
Pamela Gray

Pamela Gray is a candidate for District 8's County Commission Seat.

Mayor Alvarez has been a major hero in maintaining the UDB. The voters need to see that new candidates for Mayor are going to stand the same ground. I like Sosa and I hope she does the right thing next week!

On Earth Day we must remember that Hold the Line is a green issue and one of the most important in the county!

We have to speak out against the land-use attorneys as well, who will argue that the supply of developable land is running out. This argument is so old and overused that they should be ashamed of themselves, if even for the lack of creativity. There are thousand of acres of land ripe for redevelopment, even close to the central city. These sites include parking lots, skipped over vacant land, one story buildings where multi-story is already permitted, etc.

We need to do all we can to protect the native plants and animals and their habitats. Humans can build UP and perhaps even stop reproducing without limits!

Martinez doesn't care about anyone out of his district how could he possibly think he has a chance to be elected mayor?

They have no shame.

Let's flex our grassroots muscles next Wednesday and tell our Commissioners NO. We need every voice we can get!

Philip Stoddard, Mayor of South Miami said...

South Miami residents, come on out and be heard.
Two proposals are to pave more agricultural lands, threatening the survival of agriculture in our county at a time when we're trying to promote local produce and protect aquifer recharge areas.
In the third, FPL wants permission to pave a road through the southeastern Everglades restoration project as infrastructure for further nuclear development at Turkey Point.
Be heard now, or pay forever for these needless mistakes.

Telling the County Commision NO means nothing to them. Hasen't this group of misfits done enough damage to the place we call home. Soon the UDB will be pushed to the county line. Do we the tax payers of the county know for sure if we have funds available for the tunnel project, and the baseball stadium. Our country manager says we do. Has there been a outside audit or review done, to insure that all funds and actual revenue streams are in place. What happens to the parking garages slated for the new stadium if the City of Miami goes broke. Who is stuck with the bill? It better not be the county. What about the airport, or is it still under construction and we continue to dump more money into it. Don't forget Dodge Island, the cruise capitol of the world, till Broward County got into the game. Lets not forget Jackson Hospital, which will run out of money soon. Does the county have a plan in place for when it happens and how much will the rescue plan cost the tax payers. If we all believe that the current group of elected county officals can resolve any of the problems we all must be crazy. Our only power is the BALLOT BOX lets vote each and every one out of office. The dark cloud over the City of Miami will extend over us unless we fight back now
