A note to the readers who comment. By Geniusofdespair

Most of you are great and I enjoy reading and learning from your comments on our blog but I do get tired of some of you out there in cyberspace who choose to leave nasty comments on the Eye on Miami blog. Blog comments can be a real hassle to the bloggers. I take enough abuse from my relatives, I don't need it here too so you will be deleted. The Coconut Grove Grapevine has stopped taking comments altogether, saying:

"I spend most of the day moderating comments. For every one comment you see here, there are four that come in that are libelous, stupid or insulting. I don't have the time for that anymore. Every time the computer clicks or I look at my iPhone and there are gobs of comments, I cringe. The Grapevine is here as a community service, the money that comes in from ads every month is not worth the headaches."

Readers, we don't even have ads to soften the blow of some of the hate and nasty criticism. I have asked numerous times that you don't disrespect the bloggers, in fact, that is the one rule on this blog -- always has been. I work for free, I don't want to take abuse on top of that. You can disagree but don't take cheap shots. Just because we have a blog doesn't mean you can say whatever you want. If you don't like it, happily, there is a solution for you. There is a button in the right hand corner of this page that you can press to create your own blog. If you have the inclination to be nasty here, press that button and become a blogger in a couple of minutes, and then you are free to be nasty all you want! Here is a borderline comment:

GEEZ. GET A LIFE. INSTEAD OF GOING TO THE KEYS TO VIDEO A FLOCK OF TOTALLY DUMB PEICANS (BEING ROUTINELY FED OF COURSE) WHY NOT CHECK IN ON SOME OF THE REAL ISSUES STILL PLAGUING THE KEYS?

Why I don't like this comment: First, the caps? Second, "Get a life" hate that one (could delete on that alone). Have heard "get a life" hundreds of times. Third, telling me what I SHOULD DO with my time, on a weekend yet, is pretty obnoxious. It is especially irksome since I don't know squat about Keys politics and this is Eye on Miami after all. Fourth, calling birds dumb. Of course there is also that glaring spelling error, but spelling doesn't count on this blog. This reader needs his/her own blog: Eye on the Keys would be my suggestion. But he or she probably has 'a life.'

I miss the comments on Coconut Grove Grapevine. Maybe you inherited their crazies.

We love you E O M! G O D!

Keep up the awsome work! There is no one else looking into the issues that effect us all in Miami-Dade County.

G.A.L. ALL WORK NO PLAY MAKES.........
SOUNDS LIKE THE COMMENTER LIKES WHAT YOU DO IN MIAMI AND WAS ANNOYED THAT YOU DID NOT DO THE SAME FOR THE KEYS..... THE COMMENTER WAS TELLING YOU TO DO WHAT HE/SHE HIM/HERSELF CAN'T, WON'T DO......LIKE THE CAPS :)

Love the caps..ick. Well I haven't enough of a life left to do a Keys blog.

I Am mad as hell at the Coconut Grove Grapevine closing us down. Your blog will inherit Coconut Grove's wrath - there is no where else to go.

Amusing as always. I am wondering exactly what is this life we are all suppose to be getting.

I, for one, appreciate both the insight and the humor.

I don't leave nasty comments, but I do leave comments disagreeing with EOM, your policy priorities, and reasons therefor. Judging from the frequency at which my comments are not approved, deleted, or answered with a "you must be a developer, don't anger the blogger," EOM interprets questions not as opportunities to show how smart they are, but as threats to their very human dignity. I can only imagine the horrific childhoods that resulted in such a worldview, and my heart goes out to EOM.

Save your heartfelt crap. If you use words like "venom" in your post you are not pointing out disagreement you are on attack. Look at the Cal Thomas post, people know how to disagree civilly. You might think you are being civil but are not in actuality. Like this condescending comment post you made here. It is just annoying and yes, it is a personal jab which I specifically referred to -asking you not to do. You don't get it. Why are you talking about my human dignity at all. Write about the issues not MY personality or what you perceive my personality to be.

I find your comment offensive too, Anonymous. Why are you writing about the Childhood of the bloggers? And making assumptions on how bad their childhood were? There is something wrong with you, you just don't see how offensive you are.

Doesn't Blogger have a toggle for allowing "Only Registered Users" to comment?

Naturally, there's a workaround for the haters, but to force them to create even a sham persona is, um, ethically or at least aesthetically amusing.

Anonymous said...

Gee, anonymous rude people, who would have thought it?

Geniusofdespair said...

Yes there is such a toggle, however, we were trying to have the readers do as little as possible in hoop jumping so that we would not discourage legitimate comments.

damn the haters.

youtube comments often makes me question humanity.

Does this qualify as an abusive posting Genius?

In some undetermined future time an anthropologist in search of pure crystalline stupidity will stumble over the Florida Legislature. The search will end there.

The US Senate has now terminated the voucher program that helped cripple the public schools in D.C. but in Florida legislators are rushing to extend and enhance voucher funding. And did you hear the one idiot argue that some of the people's tax money should be given to private schools because it's private money? "His money" (the taxes he pays) is his private money!

Then because these boobs are incapable of addressing the State's budget deficit in the only way it can be addressed (by raising the taxes of the wealthy and the developers and corporations that have raped this state) they are ready to take a stand on the budget of the United States of America. They need to hide from Florida's emergency behind a meaningless call for a balanced federal budget.

Their pea-brains are unable to fathom that the dollar's status as the world's reserve currency and the deficit spending it allows for is responsible for the rise of the US to the planet's single and unrivaled superpower. It's the reason they have lived in the lap of luxury until now. Their beloved US military could never be deployed from Japan to Afghanistan to Germany without the unique right of this country to run budget deficits.

All of these mental defectives were elected in an era when nothing was required of public officials except a pulse. Serious people were actually running things and these blowhards were supposed to make an occasional speech and then run off to a banquet where they take turns giving awards to each other. They were rewarded for their service by getting a chance to feed at the public trough. You know, get your hair cut for $135 or travel to Europe with a few friends.

These pathetic souls are incapable of grasping how drastically things have changed now. The economy of the US has been mortally wounded and is on life support. The only thing that stands between us and total shutdown today is the FED's printing presses. But the day when the plug must be pulled is nearing.

When the end comes for the economy and the social order it generates, it will be dangerous to have been a Florida legislator. People in the deepest pain of deprivation will go looking for those who fiddled while Florida burned and those who cowered from real leadership in this crisis. They won't even know what hit them but for sure the arrogance of ignorance will be gone.

"The taxes I pay are my own private money." There you have it, one of the legislature's rocket scientists.

Nope, that was interesting.

I fully believe that the haters and the idiots should be refused publication. Eye is to important to mess up. I find some very intelligent people commenting and i really enjoy them. Maybe we should trace the dummies and have them commited.

I can't believe that M is Irish too! My last name starts with "Mc". M must be my right wing twin! As a Libra, I guess there's a balance there somewhere.

The other McM

Geniusofdespair said...

That completely slipped by me. No, I doubt M is really Irish.

I try my best to excersie respect with the comments I've placed on this blog and think we do have a lot of liberty to say what we please. I do try never to use foul language, but but once in a while (damn) I wish I could just sound off and say what's really (really) on my mind about an issue or a politician or two! But . . . that could be censored.

hmmm...i like reading most of the comments here because i usually learn something new in them, but it would not be a catastrophe if we were all gone. as long as you allow pure anon. commenting you are going to get a certain amount of drive-bys. i suspect that you probably delete far more comments than are posted each day.
may i (fake humbly) suggest either posting a comments guideline statement or requiring posters to give you (not us) a bit of real information (valid email addy) so that if necessary you can verify a comment?
