School Board Seat 6 - Another Race to Watch! By Geniusofdespair

While searching election records this morning, I came across this. I have to believe the Raquel Regalado running is the daughter of Tomas. Maybe someone else has reported this and it is old news, but I can't know everything.

I have met and spoken with this woman and I am impressed. Lovely lady in all respects. Don't care for the incumbent's voting record. Raquel will have the name recognition needed to win.

They are taking over.
(In a good way)

Raquel Regalado is very bright and she is very well informed. Not only is she a very successful attorney but she is the mother to two young children. Ms Regalado would make an excellent member of the School Board.

We hope she runs a very visible and successful campaign.

Granted Tomas was the lesser of two evils in Miami race, but this doesn't smell right.
Politics should not be the family business.

I live in the district and didn't know she was running.

I was very happy to read her name on the ballot for my school district! She is a wonderful and caring person, intelligent and involved in our community. Yes, name recognition is good, but what she will bring is even better - fairness and honesty. Goooo Raquel!

The Regalado's are good people. I have spoken to the three kids and I have left impressed. Raquel took over her Mother's old radio show and has created quite a following. I think with her up she will bring the school board out of the shadows.

Good for her :-)

I've known Raquel since she was law clerk with Holland & Knight. She impressed me then, back then we all joked about when she would run for office herself, I'm glad it finally happened. Good for you Raquelita, you are exactly what the school board needs.

Raquel Regalado appears to be just starting her campaign. She would be a breath of fresh air on the School Board so we all hope she has enough time to meet the voters and the financial backing to run and win the seat.

I predict she will win the post. I am interested to see how this one shakes out.

I just met her at Carver Middle’s career day. I didn't know she was running but she has my support. She is a great role model and an inspirational speaker. Can’t wait to see what she has to say!

Other accomplishments include dating a Carollo ("Frankie") for over a year without being a victiom of domestic violence, quite a feat worthy of praise, my vote she'll have to earn with more than just scripted post.

Also she is a single mother who works full time and has two kids. I dont think people she dated matter.

Typical, a young, professional, intelligent, and accomplished woman decides to run for office and instead of discussing her ideas, her achievements, her values and her family someone brings up who she dated. I've never heard anyone mention who any male candidate for any office has dated in the past. And then people wonder why our pool of candidates is so limited. Either way, I don't think those attacks are not going to scare this particular female, I also predict that Regalado's daughter will win.

Wow Cato, class act.

I don't care who she dated, she is hot. It's about time Miami has a hot female politician. I'll watch the school board meeting if she is there.

Touchy touchy touchy I honestly thought it was a positive point considering both Carollo's track record.
Now quite honestly I'm tired of folks making politics the family business no matter what they'rename is Kennedy, Bush, Barreiro, diaz de la Portilla, Carollo, Suarez,Gelber, Diaz Balart etc etc etc.
Other than she's a woman (obvious)a mom (a lot of women are) and a lawyer (quite a few women in that proffession)what else does she bring, other than her fathers last name?
Will she have the Ovaries to stand up to the teachers union? Will she refuse money from slimebags like Dusty et al? Will she tear into the land deals and construction contracts? Or will she play the Cuban card with the book?
All fair questions in my book, please save the scripted responses about a single mother, lawyer, caring etc I've heard it all before.
Call me a curmudgeon.

Cato I guess you never met or heard Raquel Regalado senior before she passed. If she is anything like her mother she has the ovaries.

And no, saying anything about domestic abuse and a woman in the same sentence is not a positive thing

I never post on this blog but for the record Cato it appears that you don't know much about the school board since in fact there is no female attorney, young or otherwise and there is no young single mother on the board. It also appears that your issue is with her father and her last name since you admit to not knowing a thing about her. Her last name aside, I'm just glad a young professional woman is interested in the post. As for standing up to the powers that be, the incumbent never did and never will so at least with Regalado there is the hope that she might.

A Regalado is always a hot topic. The good news is that where they walk people pay attention. The school board flys under the radar too much.

The neutral news is that this family can enter the political dynasty that so many people love and hate.

Either way, a force to reckon with.

Very true, love them or hate them they bring media and change wherever they go. I actually tuned into her radio show today and was impressed to hear her discuss the museums, Jackson and the other issues currently before the county commission. If her radio show is any indication the school board is in for some serious change.

Brilliant!!! so if we just elected single mothers who are attorneys who are related to another politico all the problems in our schools system will dissapear.
You're kidding right?
I'm not concerned with someones marital, parental or professional status, I am concerned with Bloated Budgets, sweetheart land and construction deals and with a teachers union full of cronyism, that punishes good teachers while rewrading scum, that's what I am concerned about.

Raquel Regalado is smart and she has strong opinions. She appears to be very independent.

I don't know her, but I googled her and can't imagine that a female patent litigator is a pushover. As for being a single parent I think that is noteworthy, teachers and administrators assume that all parents have support and some of us don't. Do her children go to public schools? Most of the school board members have their children in private schools.

A new candidate has entered the race. Dr. Maria Peiro has been a teacher in Miami-Dade County Public Schools for 16 years. Her children have always attended public schools.

If you've ever tuned in to the School Board meetings, you've probably seen her at the mike speaking against the district's wasteful spending, corruption, nepotism, tax increases, ineffective superintendencies, etc. She is intelligent and always very prepared with facts.

You want to talk about ovaries..It takes really BIG ones to stand up to your bosses (superindent & school board) when you're a teacher in the district.

I'm hopeful that the voters will look past name recognition and really listen to Dr. Peiro's ideas and accomplishments as an educator and an agent of change.

I agree with the majority of the comments. Raquel Regalado is probably the best candidate. From what people know of school board meetings they will surely benefit from her professionalism and strength. At the same time Dr. Peiro hasn't demonstrated the ability to build consensus and teachers don't seem to support her since she supported the performance pay in SB6. Zayas-Bazan has too many insider friends and this leads to favoritism. Bareira is no longer serving his community. Yeah, I think Regalado is the best candidate.

Ms Regalado is a Lawyer with no school board experience, just because she is Regalado's daughter does not make her a better candidate. Eduardo Zayas-Bazan is Professor Emeritus, which in and of itself shows that he has much more experience in dealing with school boards, in my opinion Ms. Regalado, is trying to climb the ladder through this post, her intent is not do do a thing with regards to the district 6 school board, just to make a name for herself, rideing on her fathers coat tails, with a bigger agenda. We in district 6 do not need a lawyer we need a professor such as Dr. Eduardo Zayas-Bazan.He will help not hinder District 6.

Ms. Regalado or Dr. Peiro would be an improvement over the incumbent who always sided with Rudy Crew's initiatives, leaving the school system in financial shambles. Then he didnt have the "pantalones" to question the rubberstamp appointment of Carvalho.
