Voter Fraud or Inept Typist? By Geniusofdespair
The Miami Herald Neighbor's section lists voters who are going to be dropped by the Elections Department. I hate to see voters dropped. I looked at the first name and thought, could it be the head of the Aviation Department, Jose Abreu (pictured)? I knew it wouldn't be but I checked it and found out something more interesting. I put the address in the property appraisers search and guess what? No such address. I looked up the area on their map. There were a few farms and none have changed hand for the past few years. Either the Election Department keyed in the wrong address in their records or this voter committed fraud. I only looked up one...what about the rest of them? How could this 'Abreu' person have submitted proof of an address that doesn't exist? I think it is just as likely that a typo might be kicking him off the voter rolls. Lester Sola, no wonder your letters are getting kicked back, do some investigation on this one!

Either scenario, this is a crime!
Genius, I think you have uncovered something sinister. I hope elections, since they have down-time, uses it to spot check the list of voters they are dropping for fraud, or what you call Typo's.
Lester Sola has several of us waiting on a response to a public records request from the last county election cycle. I doubt he gives a rat's tail about people being bumped off the list if he doesn't even care to respond to legal records requests.
This isn't someone just being bumped off -- this person should not have been on the list to begin with. He apparently had fraudulent papers as the address doesn't exist. Or, Sola's staff should proof-read every entry made because this could be an un-excusable error -- getting someone bounced!! Either way, big stuff!!
why don't you buy a scissor you cheapskate?
THe Miami-Dade property website is usually VERY out of date. Try Clerk of the Courts records for more up to date info.
The word is scissors, it's plural, you jerk.
That is indeed MIA Jose Abreu. To my knowledge he does not live in Redland as the address indicates.
What a hoot; the head of MIA cannot vote.
I know it is not Airport Abreu, the name motivated me. The PA records showed no address matching the voter record address-- that is up to date enough for tax purposes...you are missing the point. this in't a new registered voter so you don't need records anymore up to date. PA is pretty current.
Ya know, Eye On Miami, as a reader I feel a little misled. I happen to know that when a voter registers to vote, the address is confirmed. What if a person lived in a trailer there at one point and moved? Wouldn't it then be the responsibility of the voter to update their record? Who's fault would it be then? It seems to me you don't have enough facts. To claim its the Elections Department fault with the info you have is unfair. Futhermore, putting "voter fraud" in the title and posting a photo of the person it isn't seeks to stir unneccsary controversary.
Baco: The address does not exist. Putz.
Don't bother Genius...he or she doesn't know how to read. How many times did you say there is no such address: You even showed a map where it should have been located. And then the person says it is not the elections department's fault that they registered someone to vote at a non-existent address. They just don't get it.
Baco, if the address is confirmed when they register to vote, where is it? Go back to half-reading the Herald.
Voter Fraud had a question mark Baco. I think you work for the elections department, you are far too invested in their appearance. Why would you not be happy to uncover fraud committed by a voter?
Anna Hennessey - although showing no dwelling at that site by the property appraiser, nor are taxes being paid on a dwelling - owns the vacant land at that address. If there is someone living there then there is fraud to the property appraiser instead of the elections department.
I think thats where Demetrio Perez Jr. Jr. lives, i recognize that shack anywhere....
"Doesn't matter who votes only who counts the votes"
Joseph Stalin (former Miami Dade Commissioner?)
Elections Dept. Said:
The Elections Department correctly followed all state requirements. When a person has been flagged as a felon by the state, the Department sends a notice to the voter and then places an advertisement using the last address on file for that person. There was no "typo" as it is the same address that this voter had on his state issued driver license.
The law is very clear on the process that must be followed prior to removing anyone from the voter database. We take significant steps to ensure accuracy.
The Elections Department has is clearly not at fault here.
Are they saying that everyone on that list in Neighbors is a felon? If so maybe the fraud is not such a big deal for Jose.
The address, real or not, is out in the so-called 8.5 Square Mile Area of the East Everglades, where fraud and other crimes have long been a tradition.
The public property appraiser info is usually up to a year behind. Just because an address doesn't "exist" in the web finder, doesn't mean it isn't there.
There are entire developments that have been built and occupied that show up as farm fields still.
The orthophotography is also done only once a year, so sometimes you'll see property lines on an "empty field" even though in reality there are already houses on the properties.
Last anon I dispute your time for property appraiser website entries. I find them running a month or two behind clerk entries for the most part. Maybe in 8 1-2 square mile it is slower. But I stand behind my estimate.
West Kendall politics always very questionable. There were some really counter-intuitive outcomes in the voting during the last major election. I hope that someone takes a closer look.
Good blog item. It would be a fine idea to drive out to the address to see if it does exist. This kind of scrutiny, by ordinary citizens, is healthy and wholesome in any democratic system.
I will quibble for a moment with the concept that this is "voter fraud." Mr. Abreu may not be aware that someone registered him at all. If indeed the address is bogus, and if his driver's license also uses this address, it opens up two possibilities: He's involved in fraud of some sort, or someone with access to the driver's license or voter reg list is involved in a more wholesale form of election fraud that the "voteR fraud" people often refer to.
With Florida's loosened up vote by mail process, these kinds of apparently bogus registrations can point to a much bigger can of worms. After examining vote by mail's so-called checks and balances in considerable detail, it's become clear to me that wholesale insider-driven election fraud can be achieved by using voters who do not know someone put them in the voter reg database, and voters who vote only irregularly, by casting votes using the vacant spot created by these voters in the list.
Think of it kind of like election identity theft. The risk is with vote by mail, and it is an inside job (not done by the voter); it provides the opportunity wholesale election fraud, not retail.
After a carefuly look at how vote by mail works, none of the claimed safeguards (sig checks etc) really protect against this.
The core problem is that vote by mail conceals from the public who actually cast the absentee votes. Maybe the voter. Maybe an insider under the identity of certain voters. The voter history (how often they vote, their party affiliation) is available to insiders in the voter database.
