Miami Dems Not Happy Campers? Guest Blog By Youbetcha'

Wow. There are political upheavals all over the place!

First up: the elections up North were messy and history making. Homestead and City of Miami elections were political upsets in their own right. They both were amazing politically speaking. And, the pending removal of two Commissioners in the City of Miami will put 4 newbies on a Board of 5. You couldn't make this stuff up.

And now, comes the local Democrats, having a coup d'état of their own. What a political hailstorm this coming year is going to be. The sane voters better run for cover and grab a window seat because the wind is just starting to blow.

Opps. It looks like Dems have some dirt of their own to sweep under the rug.

Dear Fellow Democrats,

I want to take this opportunity to thank the Florida democratic leadership for entrusting me with the Chairmanship of the Democratic Executive Committee for the Miami-Dade Democratic Party.   I strongly believe that we, as the Miami-Dade Democratic Party, are a party of great opportunity, with the capability of developing into a stronger and more effective political organization focused on getting talented democratic candidates elected to public office.  I further want to take this opportunity to thank my family; specifically, my wife, Isabel, and our two daughters, Sidney and Madison, for their support in this very important endeavor.

As a brief overview  concerning my background, I began my career as the Nashua, New Hampshire campaign coordinator for Dick Gephardt's 1988 Presidential campaign.  I later  attended law school, graduating magna cum laude in 1996.  Following law school, I became a  state prosecutor assigned to the Major Case Bureau and the Rackets (Organized Crime) Bureau in New York.  After five (5) years, I accepted a position with a local Miami law firm run by Manny Diaz and Kendall Coffey.  Thereafter, I was appointed as the Finance Director for Mayor Manny Diaz's 2001 Mayoral Campaign, which proved successful.  I was a strong supporter of Bill McBride's Gubernatorial race in 2002, Alex Sink's two (2) successful campaigns for State CFO, Mayor Diaz's re-election campaign, U.S. Senator Bill Nelson's two (2) senate races, and President Barak Obama's Presidential Campaign.  Presently, I am the Senior Partner of Lydecker, Lee, Berga & de Zayas, L.L.C.,a full-service law firm located on Brickell Avenue, with more than forty (40) attorneys specializing in commercial and insurance defense litigation.

A friend recently asked me why I would want to take time away from my family and law practice to pursue the Chairmanship of the Democratic Executive Committee for the Miami-Dade Democratic Party.  My motivation is simple: I believe in the potential of the DEC.  It is my position that we all have the responsibility to do what is in our power to make our community a better place, and strongly believe that if we are successful in developing the DEC into an effective political operation that recruits, supports, and most importantly, gets talented local democrats elected as leaders in our local government, our actions will have a profound effect within our community.  Candidly, I believe this will prove to be an accomplishment of great significance, and indeed something we can truly be proud.

Undoubtedly, we will have to demonstrate a certain degree of patience in order to reach our goals; however, if we act together, I am confident that we will achieve profound accomplishments in the near future;  most certainly prior to the 2010 elections, which should be our ever-uniting goal.

Based upon my discussions with certain DEC members over the past few days, it appears as though most, if not all of us, share a common view regarding how to respond to the past practices occurring at the DEC's. The answer is to simply put this all in the past.  It is time to move forward in an effort to once again become the effective political party we all know that we can be.  Helping people (our ultimate goal) requires that we look forward, not backwards; thus, allow me to take this opportunity to assure you that the page has been turned and that the past is behind us.

I am pleased to announce that we have received approximately Twenty Thousand Dollars ($20,000.00) thus far in financial commitments from Democrats encouraged by the bold action taken by our party.  I feel strongly that when we establish our local party as an effective political operation, our support will grow, as will our membership.  As we know, money is not our goal, but rather, is only a means by which we can help provide support for our local democratic candidates.

I look forward to receiving your input and working with you all in the time to come.

Sincerely,

Richard Lydecker, Chairman
