Yes, I Agree with a Right Wing Columnist Today. By Geniusofdespair

The Miami Herald's Jackie Bueno Sousa actually made sense to me today. She said that the system of County Commissioners doling out our tax dollars to charities has to change. I totally agree with what she said here:

Like most people, I'm glad many worthy groups in the community will survive yet another year, but you'd have to be delirious with giddiness not to acknowledge there's something terribly wrong with the entire process. Basically, the county takes money away from taxpayers and gives it to commissioners to spend on their favorite pet projects. For their generosity with other people's money, commissioners get brownie points that often translate into votes.

If we have to give money (don't agree that we do), she offers a pretty sane alternative to take politics out of the mix:

Instead of handing money directly to nonprofit groups, the county could allocate all charitable funds to the Dade Community Foundation. It's the community foundation's job, after all, to do exactly what commissioners and administrators have taken it upon themselves to do -- support charitable causes in the community. The foundation has been doing a decent job of it for 40 years now...

Discretionary funds have to end at the County. I did research, the County never audits the charities and non-profits they give OUR money to, maybe the Foundation can do better.

Wonderful idea! It makes perfect sense, but probably will not be supported by those who would be losing their political clout...

I spit my coffee out when I read the Miami United Way CEO earns $600,000 plus. WOW.

Same with me...$600,000! How could they and they get our money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Dade Community Foundation is run by a former Penelas/Alvarez chief of staff.

No politics there is there?

As long as government entity is handing it out POLITICS will always be involved. Taxpayers are in need of some charity of their own which they did NOT get so I say get the county out of the charity business it just makes a circus out of the commission hearings. Police My Neighborhood, Give Me Adequate Fire and Rescue Protection, and Pave maintain and build the roads and highways the rest is BULLCRAP used by politicians to get re elected until they're carried out of county hall or led away in handcuffs.
