Did you read anything about School Taxes going up? By Geniusofdespair

Well, it looks like school taxes are going to increase - I saw this announcement in Saturday's paper but didn't see a news report. The announcement says the increase is "solely at the discretion of the school board". Feeling powerless? I am now paying 7.533 millage rate for School Board operating. So this increase would mean I will paying 7.698. On a $500,000, home the owner would be paying about $4,000 a year in school taxes (without a homestead) including the School Board Debt. Service .264. Why do they separate it? To make it more palatable?

FL Statute §200.001(3) requires different school millage rate categories which include: (a)nonvoted required school operating millage;(b)nonvoted discretionary school operating millage;(c)voted district school operating millage;(d)nonvoted district school capital improvement millage and(e)voted district school debt service millage.

FS 200 also requires that no ad valorem tax millage exceed 10 mills, except for voted levies. This millage limitation is why M-D County separated Fire Rescue from County Wide Operating several years ago – they were approaching that 10 mill wall. Look for more county-initiated special taxing districts in upcoming elections as the economy continues its death spiral.

With the decreasing school population maybe they should consolidate some schools. Ooops, they need those taxes to feed the county's sprawl. After all, we will have to provide school support for Parkland.

Thanks for posting this. I get the double whammy of Homestead taxes and School taxes on my business. Even though property values have plummeted, according to the Property Appraiser, my property is still valued pretty high - not even close to what the market will hold if I sold it. Oh, try abating? I'm still waiting for a hearing on my 2008 property taxes! I need to move and so does my business - which employs local people. They've taxed me out of business here.

I noticed the number of students declined for 365K to 342K yet # of employees rose from 36.5K to 38.3K in the same period. The total budget went from 7.1 Billion to 8.8Billion in that time frame (04-08).
Totally unacceptable #s they always hide behind the children and the elderly in order to fleece us, I don't know about you guys but I have had enough.

I've had enough too! Our school system is not the best, the School Board is a joke and they always want more money. Who audits them? Where is all the money from the Lotto, Fantasy, Mega, etc., etc., etc.? Isn't it suppose to go towards the Florida school system? How many schools have they built? Teachers hired? What percentage made it down to Miami-Dade?

Ok, I have the inside info on this one. Don't worry, the Capital millage at the School Board will not go up. They have all the cuban school board members (minus Gus) and Dr. Karp. all against increasing the capital millage by the .25 point allowed by the legislature.. So, don't worry about it, it is not going to happen.. Watch and learn..
