Campaign Reports District 3: The Sanchez Seat. by Geniusofdespair

First There Are Too Many Candidates: There are seven in a district that historically has about 6,000 votes (out of 26,000 registered). That translates to about 800 voters for each candidate. So far, there has been $60 collected for each prospective voter. Some of you: drop out.

Joe's brother Frank Carollo - Has raised $130,275.24 as of 6/30. Giving to Frank between 4/1 and 6/30 were a lot of law firms. Here is a snapshot of his report: Law Firm Becker & Poliakoff $500, Bank United FSB PAC $500, Bruno Barreiro $500 (Now that’s a bad sign), Ruden McClosky Law Firm $500, 3 Palm Enterprises, LLC (Jose Goyanes, Board Member of the DDA) $500, Niesen Kasdin $500, Michael Abrams $200 (both attorney/lobbyists), Felix Lasarte $250, Wolfson $1,200, Lawyer Delagloria & wife $1,000. He got $500 from a student in Key Biscayne, Michelle Casares. New York Parking Executive Jacob Sopher gave him $500 and a political Analyst in New York gave him $500. He has Creative Edge consulting, Tam Marketing and Jose Riesco working for his campaign.

Mavel Lopez has raised $90,570 as of 6/30, of which she gave herself a $12,000 loan. She has a lot of development money, for example 16 ($250 each) from one address 2301 NW 87th Avenue. That’s $4,000 from Sergio Pino’s address! Rasco Law firm $250. The Builder’s consultant group $250, RC Real Estate Partnership $500. Al Cardenas’ law firm, Tew Cardenas gave $500.

Maria 'Beba' Sardina Mann has raised $48,525 as of 6/30. I saw one $500 contribution in the same reporting time period. And

Luis Morse has raised $44,125 as if 6/30.

Willie Chacon has raised $21,370.13 as of 6/30.

Pedro Diaz has raised $6,011 as of 6/30. Pedro: Two words, drop out.

Below is info about Beba Sardinas Mann. She is the only candidate for district 3 that has lived in the neighborhood for more then one year. In fact she has lived there for 40 years. She is also the only candidate that has served our community with her 3 years of experience on the City of Miami Planning Board. She actually knows more about Miami -21 (good, bad & ugly) then most people. I believe it is about time Miami had a qualified Commissioner like Beba representing District 3. She would have fought against the lopsided Marlins Stadium deal, the illegal rezoning of Mercy Hospital, the Fire Fee Fiasco and permitting Home Depot from entering Coconut Grove. She would have also cleaned up Downtown before now.

BEBA SARDINA MANN
CANDIDATE FOR CITY OF MIAMI
COMMISSIONER DISTRICT #3

beba@bebamann.net

Maria “Beba” Sardiña-Mann, was born in Habana, Cuba, in 1959, to a family steeped in both politics and business. She came to the United States in 1961 with her mother and brothers. Watching her mother raise four children in a new country while working full time showed Beba first hand how hard work, honesty and integrity could overcome all obstacles.
Beba has lived most of her life in Miami, nearly 40 years of that time in the District 3 house she grew up in and which she bought from her mother as an adult. Beba attended Coral Way Elementary, Shenandoah Middle and graduated from Coral Gables Senior High. She also attended Miami-Dade Community College.
For 15 years, she rose through the ranks to become administrative assistant/office manager at the prestigious law firm of Floyd Pearson Richman Greer. Later, she joined the firms of Gunster Yoakley Valdes-Fauli & Stewart and Steel Hector & Davis (which became Squire Sanders) as an executive legal assistant. It was during those years that she first became involved in the community.
Determined to make a difference in her community, Beba became active in her homeowners’ association, Silver Bluff, fighting zoning changes and incompatible development in her neighborhood. When Silver Bluff and other homeowner associations joined forces to create Miami Neighborhoods United, Beba was an integral part of the new organization; helping Miami homeowners organize more effectively to protect their quality of life.
Beba has long been involved in local civic affairs. She was part of the team that organized Relay for Life and other activities to bring together the community. She was appointed (by Commissioner Tomás Regalado) to the City of Miami Planning Advisory Board in January 2006, and served as its Vice Chair. Beba also serves as a board member of the Urban Environment League of Miami, an organization whose mission is to support environmentally responsible development, including protection of the waterfront, public places and historic and natural areas in urban Miami-Dade County. Previously, she was a member of the Public Affairs Committee of the Junior League of Miami. During her tenure at JLM, she was part of the group that successfully lobbied for the enactment of the bicycle helmet law.

You need to go back to the first report for Mavel (Cruz) Lopez. Sergio Pino gave her a loan and $$. He is backing her big time. What is her platform?Rosario Kennedy and Al Lorenzo are running her campaign.

Mayor Alvarez and Barreiro gave to Frank Carollo. A lot of money coming in from the special interest groups. There is also more money in from Sopher than $500. Last time Frank Carollo ran for office, or maybe the second (he's on his 4th attempt) Sopher parked $14,000. Steve Marin is running his campaign. Where exactly does Frank Carollo live? He always uses a PO Box and the property in owns in District 3 looks abandoned and he has his CPA license registered to an address in District 4. What's up with that?

Anonymous said...

What's wrong with Barreiro?

Miami's initial 2004 selection of a company to build the park was done without competitive bids. This prompted criticism because the company -- Recreational Design and Construction -- was represented by influential City Hall lobbyist Steve Marin.

I love beba.
Hope she wins

Is that a transparent shirt she's wearing? Interesting choice of clothing for a candidate. What does she do for a living?

Let's not forget about LUIS MORSE. He has raised $44,125.

CHECK OUT HIS NUMBERS FOR YOURSELF: http://www.miamigov.com/City_Clerk/Pages/Elections/CampaignReports09/CampaignTreasurersRpt_Q2_LuisMorse_7_10_09.pdf

As Fransisco Alvardo in Banana Republican wrote: "He served as a member of the Florida legislature from 1984 to 1998. During his days as a legislator, he was chairman of the Cuban-American caucus in 1989 and 1990, as well as chairman of the Miami-Dade delegation in 1997.... His campaign report shows that Miguel de Grandy and Lucia Dougherty -- perhaps the two most influential government lawyers in Miami-Dade County and the City of Miami, respectively -- each gave Morse the $500 maximum. Dougherty's law firm, Greenberg Traurig, also gave him $500. Oh, and some guy named Jeb Bush, who apparently was Florida's governor, kicked in $100 to the Elect Morse effort."

Eye on Miami is slacking...

7 candidates in one district? Holy Smokes! I didn't scroll down all the way. Some of you had better drop out this is too many candidates.

Yvonne Bayona said...

Beba Mann Sardiñas is the most "qualified" candidate for our district. Her contributions do not come from any special interests. The voters in our district should take that into consideration.

Grace Solares said...

Can't agree more with Ms. Bayona's statements. Beba Mann is the candidate to elect this coming November. I have been attending City Commission hearings for many, many, many years. The only one of the Candidates running for District 3 seat that has been attending those meetings, as well as that of the Zoning Board, fighting shoulder to shoulder with us the citizens, has been Beba Mann. I have no recollection of ever seeing Frank Carollo, Luis Morse, Mavel Cruz, Colmenares, etc., at City Hall helping the voters of this City fight the injustices of the present Administration. Beba Mann, not only has been fighting with us for years, but as a member of the Planning Advisory Board she has consistently voted to protect our quality of life in our different neighborhoods. Mark my words, those running for District 3 who are being helped by the big land use attorneys, developers, etc., will have to come through for those special interests to the detriment of the neighborhoods and voters of Miami. I cannot stress enough the need to elect Beba Mann. The only one who has lived in District 3 for years and years (40), has been her; the only one who really knows the issues of the district is her; the only one who knows Miami 21 is her; the only one who is not getting dollars from special interest groups is her. As you can see, Beba Sardina Mann is the person who must be elected to be the representative of District 3 residents. She will respond to the people, not the special interests.

A positive tip for Beba is to get out and walk the neighborhood in her District, Pat Wade in Redland
did and beat the money guy (banker) in the heat of the summer when she ran in CC14 years back. She won by a big margin. Money can't buy votes by "walking the walk" & "talking the talk"

I agree there are way too many people running. Instead, a committee of bloggers should decide who gets to run.

It is the way the Founding Fathers wanted it, just read Federalist 17 where it says "too many people participating and too many choices in a democracy is a bad thing."

It is the same rationale used to prevent a vote on the Marlins' Stadium (oh wait, I did read a chapter on representational democracy somewhere but I am sure it does not apply to a case where elected oficials make a decision on behalf of the citizenry).

Another idea, there should also be a literacy test and a poll tax. And, if you are black, Hispanic, or otherwise not a resident of Coconut Grove, your vote should only count 3/5.

Is that a picture of Mavel Cruz with Al Cardenas?

Isn't he the ultra powerful former Chair of the Republican Party, Right Wing, Christian Coalition, lobbyist supporter of Romney and Rubio? I don't like him one bit!

But he gave a ton of money to Regalado. I like him now!!!

Who was racist? I haven't read anything racist, but I do have to say, I've learned a bit about the candidates. Seven in one district! Probably intentional.

Luis Morse has lived in the district for over 25 years (Sorry Beba Fans your claim of her being only longtime resident is untrue). He represented part of this district in the Florida House during the 80s and 90s, also served on Governor Bush's cabinet.
I like Beba, but I like Luis Morse more and will be voting for Luis in November his expierience and independence will be a plus for Miami especially in these tough economic times.
Too Many candidates? Maybe the Eye would like to cut it down to one (Like in Korea or Cuba).

Anonymous said...

That was a long time ago, what has he done since 1998 when he lost his seat? I think over 40 years vs. over 25 years does make Beba the longtime resident. Are you also including in the 25 years the time he spent in Tallahassee?

OMG is that Carollo's house? I live close to that house and noboby lives there. There is only a rotation of cars. Wuz up with that? Do you have to live or just own a property in the District?

I have been working with Beba Mann for a number of years as a fellow homeowner in Silver Bluff. She is well qualified to be a city commissioner and sincerely motivated to be an informed and objective one. She has performed very well on the PAB is a very hard working, responsible person not in the race for personal glory or to fill her pockets.

Please educate me someone...I live in District 3 and I have no idea who I'm voting for. But, what are Beba Mann's qualifications to be Commissioner? All I know is that she was a secretary at a law firm that was bought out and that she's outspoken? How will that translate into protecting taxpayers or dealing with a budget? I'm sorry folks, but why don't financial experts run for office? Let's recruit some!

Maria Elena Prio said...

There may not be a true "financial expert" running in District 3 but Beba Sardina Mann is by far the smartest of the candidates and I have heard most of them speak. She knows the city issues best and has a lot of common sense. Call me crazy but I like smart, informed people runnign things. She served on the Miami Planning Board and was her own person - no special interests behind her. Can't protect taxpayers if you owe favors to the special interests. She's not a professional politician like some of the others. Let's get some quality on that Miami Commission!

Beba is the bomb (if anyone still uses that term). she has been involved for a long time, volunteered on the pAB, a thankless job, so has shown her concern with the nuts and bolts of community issues. She cares about the neighborhood like none of the other candidates. Hands down, tell your friends in that neibhorhood.

I want to set the story straight, Pedro Diaz has lived in District 3 all his life. He has family roots in District 3 for at least 38 years. I believe in a fresh, young, passionate commissioner who has high moral and ethical standards. I am tired of working hard and honest to let 'others' use my dollars for their benefit. I don't want to vote for a candidate who has raised double digit dollars and already owes 'favors'. I want someone who is going to work for the betterment of the community I was raised in and love. It is time for a 'FRESH' Start and I will vote for PEDRO DIAZ as he is the only candidate who does not 'owe' favors...

Anonymous said...

Who does Beba Mann owe favors to? A campaign contribution is not an indication of favor owing...

Beba Sardiña Suports the Freedom Tower Miami Muralists for their rightful Public Recognition for the 1988 New World Mural.
Beba Sardina Mann also supports many social, civic and enviromental issues, she was the only candidate to particiate in the Imagine Miami conference this year. Beba is caring and genuine, exactly what our District #3 needs. Go Beba Go .
