Concert Review: Sonny Rollins is an animal at 78! By Geniusofdespair
I got exhausted just watching this guy. Sonny Rollins, in a white satin shirt, didn't even have an intermission at his Arsht Center Concert a few hours ago. On another excellent YouTube video he describes how he gets into a "zone" while he plays so I guess the intermission wouldn't work for him even though it would boost Arsht Center wine sales. He said the band usually complains about the amount of time they are playing but he is not aware of it he says "He is someplace else." He doesn't walk very well and he is sort of stooped over but he can still please an audience. Rollins and his group went for over two hours straight and he played almost the whole time. Near the end he had a long interactive solo (or was it a challenge?) with the drummer that was very good. I did enjoy this jazz concert, as opposed to the Jazz Fusion concert a few weeks ago.
He played the song on this video at the concert but he looks about 15 years younger on the video. Rollins played the kind of jazz I like. Does that mean I am mainstream? I hope the Jazz fans are still reading our blog, can't wait for their feedback. And, how did a Marco Rubio ad popup on this video? Wow, that sucks! Hit the X so it goes away.

Sonny Rollins is great. I wasn't able to catch the concert, but I really wish that I had. He is a fantastic musician who still tears it up now.
Its perfectly acceptable not to be into the whole fusion thing and like other Jazz artists and what they do. The fusion thing is necessary to push the limits forward to drive the art and the medium. Its the same thing as some of the experimental music in classical (stuff like Steve Reich, Stockhausen, Webern, or Boulez).
Anyhow, as a saxophone player, I really missed out on a great concert by an amazing artist. Glad to hear you enjoyed it!
