Let's Rock Mine Some More Farmland. By Geniusofdespair

I made this map so it is pretty accurate (Hit on it to enlarge it). In May our pals at Florida Power and Light are going before the Miami Dade County Commission for a CDMP amendment to change the zoning here, in the yellow square, from agriculture to rock mining. Oh, it's also outside the UDB line. I am sure it will be a slam dunk for FP&L with the unreformable majority all voting yes, go ahead.

FP&L has to raise the grade to build the two new nuke reactors at Turkey Point and here is where they want to get some of the fill. A big problem is, if FP&L digs here they are probably going to get salt water intrusion, it is too close to the bay (you can see the Bay in the aerial map to the right of Biscayne National Park). Also, this is our watershed area...hello in there, is anyone thinking? You want to give us electricity but contaminate our drinking water?

May used to be an easy breezy month. Why can't they give us a break. I am told that the Miami Dade Planning Advisory Board will hear it April 27th at 9:30 a.m.

FP&L tried to present this amendment as something in the public's interest. They tried to argue that the resulting quarry could be used in furtherance of CERP for water storage, and that the south Florida region is in desperate need for local energy sources. But the facts are stacked against FP&L and the DCA recognizes both the dangers in mining the limestone, and that neither the SFWMD nor the Army Core of Engineers have expressed any interest whatsoever in using this land for CERP. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Well. What about bonuses? To be honest, I am torn about government's involvement in companies. However, it seems every time government doesn't pay attention someone gets nailed.

BUT, I hate to give free access to rate hikes for insurances and utilities when they have a history of screwing us.

Actually, I don't quite get the banks and insurance companies merging, it used to be against the law and then it changed and look what we have now!

What ever happened to anti-trust laws?

AND for the record, you better PAY ATTENTION to the state legislature, they are giving away everything that protects us this session.

I just received the letter from FPL detailing the two new proposed lines. One runs AWFULLY close to my home in the 8.5 Sq. Mi. Area. I am going to visit the FPL site and get a better idea of the proposed run. Now we're boxed in with levees, berms, seepage canals and now high-power lines!
