40th Anniversary of his arrest in Miami: pardon Jim Morrison ... by gimleteye

On March 1, 1969 Jim Morrison of The Doors was arrested in Miami for lewd and lascivious behavior during a sold out concert at Dinner Key Auditorium, opposite City Hall. I couldn't let this moment pass without notice, having been alerted by a rebroadcast of Val Kilmer's stupendous Morrison in "The Doors" (1991). Morrison lived another two years. He died at age, 27, and is buried in Paris at Pere Lachaise Cemetery. Here's a website organizing a petition to Gov. Charlie Crist to pardon Morrison. Do you agree?

I put my IPOD on shuffle. For about a week last year, every time I passes the convention center during my run, a "Doors" song would come on. Very weird!

For those who haven't made it out to see his grave yet.

Thanks for the link JSKC. What do you think of the pardon idea!

Audiences in 1969 didn't know how good they had it... Pardon Jim, Gov. Crist!

Just about everyone over the age of 50 I know who grew up here claims he or she was at that concert!

Jim is a poet and a legend. Maybe his conviction adds to this? Regardless, there are many very difficult freedom of expression issues here and I would hope our Governor understands that anything involving the freedom of expression should be taken very seriously in order to preserve open and unencumbered discourse. The charges for obscenity are a joke, especially in the context of a rock concert. And the evidence they had on Jim for the indecent exposure is at most iffy, and doesn't hold much water (at least with a jury of peers from the 21st century). He was convicted because of the moral majority's strength at a difficult time in our nation's history. I'd hope the Governor would see this and would lay the issue to rest, and in the process make send out a message the Florida is a strong supporter of individual rights and liberties.

To answer your question: it's a great idea!

The Pardon Effort is strictly about Morrison's appeal. Just about every Doors bio you read, it says Morrison died, pending appeal. By law, the case must be dismissed, or abated, in the same manner it was done for Ken Lay, when he died after the Enron trial. They abated his case and threw out his guilty verdict. Morrison's been dead since 1971 and his appeal is STILL hanging, unresolved! What is Florida waiting on and why has it taken over 40 years for someone to point this out??
