Rick, my fifty something brother, told me at Christmas that he was fearing the loss of his job, he said they could hire a younger worker for less to do it. It finally happened, he got an offer for a retirement package and seeing the writing on the wall he took it. He settled into a retirement mindset. In a bizarre twist of fate... his company took back the offer. Instead, they fired his boss and gave my brother Rick back his job with a 10% pay cut.
This story has a very happy ending, his wife said: "Yep, although Rick was sad about the news of the retirement package off the table, the kids and I celebrated. He wanted to stay home for 10 month before looking for another job." I can understand their jubilant reaction that he was back at work, the thought of having my fastidious brother underfoot 24 hours a day would have scared me too.

He is luckier than most.
We are seeing these retirement packages everywhere. It is not counting as unemployed but it is...
Age discrimination is a big issue. Like everything else that impacts their age group when they arrive at that age, the baby boomers will change that too. Look for some mega legal action on age discrimination coming soon. They are too big of a group to just walk on . . .
It is not in the country's best interest for all these boomers to be out of the workforce. There may not be enough young people to carry this many people in retirement. Besides, a lot of them are physically fit, like to work, are extremely productive, and knowledgeable. And they can fuel this economy like no other group can. We need them to rebuild this economy and get things stable again before they check out.
