Commissioner Katy Sorenson calls for community meeting with Florida Power And Light to discuss safety at Turkey Point
(Miami-Dade County, FL) – Commissioner Katy Sorenson will host a community meeting in South Miami-Dade to discuss the growing list of safety concerns and allegations that have surfaced over the last couple years regarding the FPL Turkey Point nuclear power facility. “I have concerns that have been echoed by a number of my constituents living near the Turkey Point facility about the utility’s recent track record on safety,” explained Commissioner Sorenson. “This meeting will give our residents living near the nuclear power plant an opportunity to ask questions and get answers to their concerns.”
A recent exposé in the Miami Herald where the plant operator resigned over what he believed were demands to restart the nuclear reactors too soon is just the latest in a string of incidents around the operation of Turkey Point. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has proposed significant fines for violations of reliability standards that led to the 2008 blackout at the heart of this latest story, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission fined the utility last year for having guards sleeping on duty. In 2006, the FBI was brought in to investigate sabotage of a cooling pipe at the plant caused by a disgruntled employee.
“The regularity of these revelations is of great concern,” said Sorenson. “The community most directly at risk from a serious accident at the plant needs to know that the Utility is operating the Turkey Point nuclear power plant with the safety of our community first.”

So let's say sea level rises 3-5 feet by the end of the century... what is the ground elevation of all the roadways leading to Turkey Point?
They are going to dig giant rock pits and use the fill to build up the land -- 200 acres I think. See Gimleteye's post of March 17th.
Less than five, glub...glu...gl...
And, don't forget the "nine mile pipe" to supply an additional 84 million gallons of water daily to TP in support of the upgrade of unit 5 and the addition of 6 & 7. See: http://tinyurl.com/cw758q
Thanks for the meeting notice!
They are doing the very same thing in GA. GA Power and FPL are apparently running from the same play book.
BTW, I was just in Miami on the way to/from the Keys. Wow! I didn't realize how much development had been done in the past 10 years. Too Much...
